Everyone is so fast to judge everyones work when you can hide behind your screen and all you have to do is select a number, but when it comes to comments no one want to give them. You want to rate a photo a 1 or a 2 just because you want yours to win. It appears some found these one word comments useful some did not. Welcome to the really world, people are mean, honest people are hard to find, art is subjective. It does not matter if they use words or numbers it all hurts the creator of the work. So maybe, just maybe on the next challenge when you are going through all the photos you will stop and think how the person on the other end is going to feel. Make your vote what you think but have the balls to tell someone why.

The comment you left my image meant absolutely nothing at all - nothing about the picture, nothing positive or negative - however I mark all comments useful (as I just would rather it get lost in the various commments I receive). In some respects, I click the 'comment useful' to show that I have read the comment...

It is great to see you comment - just try to tell us WHY next time. Cheers.

Hahaha thank you for welcoming us to the "really" world.. I thought I was in the "not really" world. I think it's funny that you are posting this. You were hiding behind your screen until we called you out. Balls to the wall?? Let's see YOUR images! lol

Your stats:
Votes Cast: 451
Avg Vote Cast: 4.2528 (granted, you can vote anyway you like, this worries me)

Zepcrmc's comment on my photo was a little terse, but a quite legitimate observation. Whether I agree with him over it's relevance or importance is a different issue, but having drawn my attention to a perceived flaw, it is up to me to whether I chose to ignore it, take something from it, agree with it, diagree with it. Unless other comments are of a substantially different nature, it seems a bit unfair to call him out - how welcoming we are to new members!

May not be the best speller in the world and my ipad has a tendency to change words on my.

I am not hiding behind my screen, remember I left comments not just numbers.

I fully understand what you are saying about people leaving low scores with no comments. But, for example, when an image is Black and white, is of interest (maybe not to everyone), sharp, in focus and certainly meeting the challenge...why would the one word of 'nope' be helpful to the photographer? That means absolutely nothing except maybe 'no' to everything about the image in relevance to the challenge? I didn't mean to call you out, but I would like to understand how a comment such as that can be of any more help than a low vote?

I dunno. I appreciate the time you put in for this. it takes so much more time to comment, even for yes/no/like/meh comments. I think these are helpful, albeit not descriptive, as they inform us how you, a viewer, receives our images. most might find them unhelpful however because whilr a simple "no" might indicate how you viewed an image it does not say why--was it the content/composition/editing that put you off? it takes even more tome to do this though, but if your aim was to comment on all images I don't see why you wouldn't want to make your comments worthwhile to the photographer. otherwise what's the point?

No they're not. A monkey could carbon copy "no" in every photo's comments box. That shows neither effort nor usefulness, and it certainly doesn't prove the point he's trying to make. Fairly sad, actually.

I thought the 'no' commenter was a different one to Zepcrmc - confused.

i can appreiate that. i did say they werent insightful though. besides i got a "like it" instead of a no--much more helpful! ;-)
you cant expet everyone to like your image. no means it isnt liked. i dont begrudge someones honesty, be it not insightful or blunt. i would prefer an essay, of course, but dont expect one as i assume we all dont.

It's only subjective to a point. When you say something that's dead wrong, like stating that a specific color needs to be removed from a B&W image, that's just off the reservation. It helps to have some basic knowledge when you make a recommendation about one's work.

Originally posted by Zepcrmc:

Is it really off the reservation. There are many other tones and colors in B&W than just Black and White. Photos can have yellows, cyan in them.

And again.....some knowledge might be helpful here.....

These examples would be duotones, i.e. sepia, or a cyanotype, wouldn't they?

Easily distinguishable from a B&W image.....

I hear ya, and not to kick a dead pig, but it's all just a bit rich to those of us who do actually put time and effort into commenting that this guy/girl thinks that racing through the challenge in 10 minutes and dropping two- to three-letter comments makes him/her the bastian of voting accountability, as though it was a lesson we all desperately needed.

Niall, I must disagree...I don't find these types of comments helpful at all. It takes no time at all to post comments like that, which essentially contribute nothing.

I got "Ouck" for my one word comment. So, did that mean Ouch, or Puke, or Duck, maybe Luck? I'm not sure.

@bokemka, gcoulson, perhaps it would have been better put if I had said I don't find them unhelpful.

Abyway, back to scores. I'm still very happy with this one! 6.PB so far. Hoping it'll stay there.

This thread has degenerated into nastiness. Please, everyone, we're not like this. You can debate whether no or ok is useful, in depth, whatever, but there's no need to hang people out to dry.

This is not the DPC I enjoy -- it's very sad what this has turned into. It used to be a fun thread -- now it's just acidic. :(

I've never found most comments "helpful" unless the commenter goes into great detail as to why he or she likes, dislikes, or offers a thoughtful way to change it, which most people don't have the time for. I think just "comment read" would make a lot more sense in the tick box, but that's just my take on it. Ok, let's all put on our happy hats and sing Kumbaya.

Naw -- it's not a kumbaya moment. It is a get happy moment, however.
