Alrighty, after uploading four photos to Dreamstime, and getting four downloads, I really want to try my hand at adding some shots to different stock sites and increasing my portfolio. I noticed when signing up for Alamy, they had this in their submission guidelines

***(THEY WANT) Uncompressed file sizes of more than 24MB. This means you should make your JPEG file from an 8 bit TIFF file that is at least 24MB. If you have a camera that is capable of producing an uncompressed 8 bit file of over 24MB then leave it that size.

I've always shot in RAW... always... and have never had a file get anywhere near 24 mb... Some of my larger raw files were around 16mb... Does this mean that these images are not allowed to be submitted??? Just curious, pardon the ignorance as I am new to this whole stock thing...

Nah you should be fine with a D200 file. If you're really stressing set your D200 to capture in TIFF and see what you get. Or save your unedited RAW into TIFF.

Yeah I was just kinda thrown for a loop when I saw that. I know most other sites have like a 2-4 mp minimum... but 24 mb files???? Holy Crap!!!... LoL... Well, I'll try submitting some shots that have already been accepted to other sites and see what I get :)

TIFFs are just huge, so it seems outlandish. Most other formats (like jpeg) are compressed a good deal, so they're really small by comparison.

One note is that uncompressed the size of the file directly relates to the resolution and bit depth of the image. The other that is RAW files are compressed so yeah.

If the image is 8 bit at one resolution it will come out to one size, at the same resolution at 16bit uncompressed it will be a larger size. If the submissions are jpegs remember once decompressed they will be looking at an 8bit per channel uncompressed image.

An uncropped 10 MP image would never have to be stressed over. It seems 8MP is borderline.

Depends upon your settings (at least on some bodies). I've never heard a convincing argument to do uncompressed vs. lossless compressed, but you can.

Alamy is NOT a "micro-stock" site -- they are primarily a rights-managed site in competition with Corbis and Getty ... download payments are reckoned in tens (or hundreds) of dollars, not cents.

I highly recommend you do NOT upload files you already have at sites like Dreamstime or Shutterstock -- send them different files.

You can easily estimate the size of an uncompressed TIFF (8-bit RGB mode) by multiplying the number of MP in your camera by three ... a 24MB file would require an 8MP or larger sensor.
