I'm new to this site, and I tried to submit a photo. It wouldn't let me because the size was too big. (3888x2592) I have a Canon eos Rebel xTi. The lowest I can get that camera to go is 1936x1288. The rules say no more than 800 pixels on each side. Is there a way to get the size lower? Do I need to use a program like photoshop, irfanview, etc?

Yes, you need to resize in software. To be honest, other than when the challenges are run under the 'Minimal Editing' ruleset, a completely unedited image would pretty much always benefit from some form of computer-based software edit (in addition to resizing).

Thanks. Any recommendations? I've played with photoshop before but its been years, I assume that's the way to go. I am hesitant to drop the $$$ on that just to resize a few photos.

Picasa works well for resizing and it's free.

If you don't want to spend money on an image editing software, GIMP is free. Just google it and download it.
Its a bit confusing but has most functions that one needs. Photoshop is much much better of course.

Shame on all of you for not directing the op to the tutorials! :)

There is a tutorial here that shows how to do it with photoshop but will probably be helpful whatever program you are using.

I's an older one tho and tells you the max size on one side is 640, but it is 800 now.

Corel Paintshop Pro is another good budget choice, and is what I use. A lot of similarities to Photoshop, including the ability to use most Photoshop compatible plugins. The current version is X3, but you can get a steal of a deal on the perfectly good X2 for under $20 at Purplus software.

You can pick up an older version of photoshop elements for around $25 it can do almost everything CS5 can do. I tried CS5 recently on someone else's computer and was very surprised to learn it does not have a project bin like elements does. I use my bin so often I've decided I don't want to upgrade. I think I will upgrade to elements 9 once it gets a little cheaper, it has masking which is about the only thing I wish I had in elements that CS5 has.

Thanks for all the great info! I've been into digital photography for a while, but was recently informed about this site. Seems like a great community...with a lot of knowledge.

The thread Freebie Imaging Software: The Big List has links to many photo editing programs and accessories.

I think the quickest "right now" editor is picnic.com. It's free and available online for basic fixes such as resizing... maybe it will be useful for you until you get your own software.
