Hi all, I was just wondering when the last time there was a GTG organised in the UK? Would anyone be up for it? Lots of bank holidays coming up and spring seems to be springing! I live down on the Dorset coast near The New Forest and don't take nearly as much time as I should to explore. I'd be open to other location suggestions!

Any thoughts?

Well I'm up for that!. I'm based in Portsmouth so something South coastish would be almost local.

Been a few years (May 2008!) since I met up with any DPC'rs, so I would be interested in a GTG !

I am open to any location as long as it is accessable via train !

Surely coming down to the sunny South won't hurt you? We are quite friendly:)

Would love to, but it's a helluva long way to drive! Mind you, Portsmouth would give me a chance to visit my sister in Winchester.

This may sound stupid...what is GTG?

I'd be up for it too! Easy trip down the M5 for me.

I'm in Caerleon, South Wales and would be up for a meet. I don't drive however so may have to train and, perhaps, B&B it which may get pricey depending on location.

Great stuff! Well my next question is, having never actually attended a GTG, what exactly does one do?! I take it there's some picture taking involved, but is it a one day affair or are we talking a weekend-long photo binge? Certainly if everyone ended up coming down to the south coast there's a weekend's worth of potential activities here, tourist spot and everything!

What kind of thing normally happens at these events? Check me out starting a thread about soenthing I don't really understand! :D

Only been to one - in London - so we all met up and had a walkabout , took pictures, had something to eat.
So it can be a 1 day thing or a weekend. Just need somewhere where there are a lot of photo ops and a decent pint/food place and if a weekend then a cheap b&b.

:-)

Ok that sounds good, particularly the creativity- enhancing pints.

So the two questions are location and date then I guess, my area has lots to see and photograph, Durdle door, lulworth cove, Corfe castle, Bournemouth, Poole, New Forest etc but is it going to be too far away? Would people prefer a more central location? I'm easy as my girlfriend lives up in Leeds and I travel up there all the time with work, so as long as we're not talking Newcastle I can do it.

Bank holiday weekends are Royal wedding 22nd to 25th April (possibly not good), then may day 2nd may weekend, then 28th to 30th May weekend. My vote would probably be for the end of May, just to give everyone lots of time to plan, and the weather will have the best chance! Any preferences / thoughts?

I've been to a couple of London GTG's, and essentially done a nice big circular walk that encompassed lots of different scenery , a few coffee shops , and a pub/Pret for lunch.

So for instance if you were going to do one in locally you would want to be able to say meet at the sea front, then work out a walk that takes 2 or three hours allowing for a meandering pace, people wandering off randomly as things catch their eye and the fact that trying to keep a group of photographers heading in one direction at a vaguely similar pace is astonishingly like trying to herd cats . . then throw in toilet stops, coffee stops and the day soon passes.

What you don't want is people having to get in and out of cars or trying to travel between places, so while places like Lulworth are great there is very limited access for non-car owners, and fairly limited opportunities past the obvious, the New Forest is always a delight if the weather is nice, but again limited variety.

Somewhere like Bournemouth (beach, city centre, people buildings etc), Sandbanks (similar but fancier houses and cars), Winchester (throw in older buildings plus Cathedral), Salisbury (much like Winchester- but without the Montezuma's shop) any of these would be pretty good. Easy road and train access, plenty of coffee shops and snack bars / pubs.

You then just need a date, route, and a few volunteer.

:-)

p.s. lure Simms down from Essex and be astonished at his ability to cajole members of the public into posing for him . .

Sounds good to me. Salisbury or Winchester would make an interesting day out. Bournemouth, Poole or similar on a Bank Holiday weekend would be horrendous, New Forest might not be so bad.

I'll keep an eye on this. Should be able to pick up Mike somewhere local so he doesn't need to worry about trains.

Salisbury and Winchester are great towns, the Cathedral in Winchester is stunning and my sister lives near there so she'd probably be able to make some kind of suggestion as to where we could go.

In the New Forest it's easy enough to get a train to Brockenhurst station, from there there are loads of walks around the area and into the forest. Ponies, trees plains etc!

What about another London jaunt? Central, interesting, lots of pubs!

I thoroughly enjoyed the London GTG a few years ago - still got the folder in my portfolio. I'd definitely try and make a GTG in the North, but not sure if I would have enough time/be able to afford to make a South Coast GTG - would be good though. If you are planning a large GTG, the more notice the better so that those travelling by public transport have a better chance of cheap fares, and those that are coming from a distance and want to make the most of the travel and have a short break can book time off work.

Hmm, if I could incorporate the GTG into a short holiday it might be a possibility...

Edit - do I get to be in charge of breaking and entering the pub again?

I like the idea of the New Forest or London. I've had a quick look at trains and, of course, it's pure insanity. I can get to Brockenhurst in 3 hours for £12 and Winchester in just over 2 hours for £57. Typical rail nonsense. Blame privatisation-i do. London would be good for me as i've got somewhere to stay but, at the moment, i'm not sure if i can make it so best not to take my input too seriously.

Perhaps? You did a good job and still have a price on your head for that raid, but you failed miserably in supplying alcholic refreshment.

If it's London, uncle Zigomar is game.

I live in London so there's good for me, but I'll come to the south coast if that's where the meet is.

You done it so well last time I would say YES, but try to get the drinks poured out before the staff arrive next time.

Thanks Steve, that is very kind of you.

I can do most dates except for end of may as I am off to Turkey on 18th May for 2 weeks :-)

Could be interested.

I'm interested in coming along. I live in Cheshire but have family in Sussex so North, South or in the middle, I don't mind! I wonder if London is the best location though as it's probably the easiest for everyone to get to and, for those coming by train, there's more chance of getting a cheap advance fare?
