Somebody went back and bumped me up 2 points. Thanks!
Still tanking hard, though.

Thanks! I will be doing the same before the challenge is over.

Ahh!
Such grumpy voters

I've garnered 16 points from my past 4 votes. I'll just imagine it was a 10 and three 2s so that I'm at least connecting with somebody.

Down to 4.8. That's a full point drop since I saw the score first at around 30 votes. I don't think I have ever seen such a fall.

However, I do have two interesting comments, which may reveal why some of the voting is lower than expected (not only on mine, but various other photos). Both comments made the point that my water bottle isn't necessarily the main subject. However, the description of this challenge simply states "Use a water bottle in your entry."

So I wonder if a lot of low votes are going out to shots like mine where the water bottle may not be considered the main subject, even though that wasn't a stipulation at all. Hmm, something to chew on for a while :/

I was aware of the openness of the challenge, but I still left that sort of comment on a couple of shots. Some of them seemed to just put a bottle in the shot to meet the challenge, and imho the bottle added little to the composition (and I said so.) I also noted when it seemed to me to be a bottle other than a water bottle. In most cases I gave the benefit of the doubt.
Oh, well. At least you got some feedback. I think my shot is decent. Not ribbon worthy and I don't love it, but I'm not getting much feedback as to why others are dropping <4s on it.

I too left comments on those photos that seemed to use a water bottle as a supporting character. I rated every photo generously I think since some made no sense to me. My lowest vote was a 5 and I'm trying to comment on each one. I hope others see the entries differently and vote accordingly. I'm new here and maybe I've got the wrong outlook on this but the Picture should speak for itself taking the theme into account. If it grabs my attention I study it. If it doesn't then it missed the mark with me. I still give the photographer credit for his/her work and rate it, not using my bias but on the merits of the photo. Sometimes that's a middle of the road vote. If I ever leave a 1 vote I will definitley leave a comment as to why I did so. I guess everyone has a different threshold to start with and if they stick to that across the board it's fair for everyone whether it's a 4 or 7. We all need a jump off point and some may be more generous than others. Not complaining here, just explaining my thoughts. I'm still having fun with the camera. And thanks again to all that left comments. Good or bad they help!

I spoke too soon. My last three votes add up to 9.

A bit unexpected to be soooo low

03/17/2011 07:55:17 PM · #89
Since I was so dissatisfied with almost all entries to this challenge (starting with mine) I took the time to comment on 66% of them (79 of 119) especially to the ones I marked 5 or under (and of course to the ones that I liked). I think that the puzzlement especially of the newcomers over the low marks is worth taken in consideration and that if not always, (for lack of time), at least on occasion, we shall say why we score low some submissions.
I personally appreciate any comment more than the marks.

I LOVE getting DNMC comments on a challenge with about as simple a description as you can get.

Not sure what emoticon to use: , or , or

Wow! The last couple of hours have been tough and 5 days to go? At this rate I'll owe DPC points when it's finished. But, I'm still having fun.

And I love getting comments saying my photo is not original and then I look at the commenter's photos and don't see any originality either. Sheesh!

Thanks for your comment, and great commenting work! I'll try to mirror your work here. What was your average vote, out of curiosity?
I did PM you about mine, though, as I disagreed with it :) (but don't change your vote based on my PM, please!)

The theme of this challenge didn't sound all that exciting to begin with but after I went through the entries I was pleasantly surprised to see some very well done images. I found myself giving out some very high scores on many of the entries. I'd say job well done to everybody considering the theme was not exactly the most inspiring we have seen around here :)

Owch. Every time I refresh my score is lower. I think I'm going to stop refreshing and just ride the invisibility wave until the challenge is over. I received 3 comments at the beginning of the challenge, but I haven't gotten anything recently that would explain why my score tanked overnight. I keep looking at my photo to see what's wrong with it to warrant a sub-5 score. *shrug*

Also a thank you to DPhoto for constructive criticism.

Well Niall, I sent you a PM also. I am not surprised by my score so far and I looked at it only because you asked for. I normally hope to get as many comments as I can get and do not pay much importance to the mark.
So, my bottles got so far what they truly deserved ( I would have given myself a 4, for effort):

And thank you very much for the beautiful comment on the Out of Balance challenge. I was mighty impressed by all comments.

I hate "not original" comments. Stupid. Especially in the SAME challenge -- like two people colluded. Ugh!

To the original comment by glad2badad, it's the ones with the SIMPLE description that will garner the most DNMC comments -- it's very easy to tell if they made it or not.

To those complaining about comments noting DNMC or lack of originality...I'd welcome even those. At least I'd know why the low votes are coming in, even if I don't agree with their assessment. Not everyone is going to see it my way, and I won't please everybody. Pleasing half of everybody is even a struggle. So, if someone were to leave some evidence as to the reasoning behind their vote, good or bad, I think it's helpful.
I will say, though, that I'm not super fond of critical posts from people that have never sacked up to enter a challenge.
