I was wondering how much programming would be needed to add software to our profiles. It could be useful. For example, my current list would include:

Adobe Photoshop CS5
Adobe Lightroom 3
Adobe Photoshop Elements 7
NIK Silver Efex Pro 2
NIK Dfine 2
NIK Viveza 2
NIK HDR Efex Pro
NIK Color Efex Pro 3
NIK Sharpener Pro 3
Photomatix Pro 4

I added a line to my bio section showing the primary software I use. That puts it not too far under the camera and lenses list. Would be nice to have it in a list that was site integrated, however.

I've always thought it would also be fun to have an accessories section in addition to the camera and lenses. Understandably it would be A LOT of work to create a database for such items along the lines of the camera and lens section, but it wouldn't necessarily have to be done that way. An area where we could make our own customizable lists with details such as:

Computer Platform...ie. Windows or Mac
Monitors or laptops used
Monitor calibration tools if used (such as my Spyder3Studio SR kit)
Software
Flashes
Lens Filters
Tripod legs and heads
Extension Tubes
Grips
Wacom tablets
Printers
Camera bags
Studio Lighting
Light Modifiers etc.

Basically anything related to doing our photography.

That would be a lot of fun to read what "toys" everyone uses to create their work. :)

I totally agree, this would be so handy to have and use.

I agree this would be a great feature if possible. Especially for someone who's still learning like me that could PM the owners of the same software for advice.

Yes, exactly. Even just a simple listing like this would be a great resource for people. Even if it was represented by a small document icon on our profile page that when clicked would open up a new HTML formatted window for others to view. It would open up a lot more social communication between members and registered users curious as to equipment and work flow habits. Sounds like a lot of fun to me. :)

Exactly.

Whilst I very much like the idea of encouraging education on gear, I think that photography already suffers from a heavy dose of gear obsession and this may have the perverse effect of encouraging that, espousing a "I need to have X X and X to shoot like _____," particularly for beginners. Maybe it's just me...

I am learning a lot of software at the moment (I am a beginner in NIK software). Knowing who to ask directly for pointers if I get stuck would be very useful. Forums are great but not all questions require a wide audience.

Great idea! Might be a bit of work though making the input form to add all this info. :/

This can be said about any tool of any trade. It will never be avoided. I think the benefit outweighs any negatives aspects. We can't always NOT do something because someone down the street might be offended, jealous, have the wrong impression etc. I do see your point, and can appreciate it, but we are in the end individuals with our own brains and possess the intellect to know when all the best gear in the world won't improve our skills. Some of the best photographers I know own low end gear and visa verse. The same can be said about musicians, artists, writers, etc.

An example of why a list would be nice....When the Canon 7D was released I sent out about 12 emails to DPC users who had purchased one to congratulate them, and also ask them for their thoughts on it. That was very reassuring that all my research and desire to buy one was on the right track. I was able to do that because all the cameras have a profile page and I can click to see a list of owners. That's SO helpful in a community like this. I guess you have to look at it in the positive vein. Suppose those 12 people emailed me back and said "Dave, don't buy it...it's crap". Well, 1 or 2 people might not be enough to sway me, but a list of people would. That would be money I saved thanks to having the ability to know who owns what and get their take. :)

Yeah, exactly. I definitely agree with you, I just wonder at what point we are or aren't encouraging it, you know? I certainly think lights would be good to add though. I guess maybe some of my unease is with software particularly, because MANY things that the various plugins do can be done in other (though more difficult) ways, and I think its beneficial to learn those ways and sorta explore instead of directing ones output in quite that fashion. Makes me wonder if it doesn't sorta box beginners in stylistically? Sorta just running all these things through my mind aloud.
But I don't think writers really get mega pen/keyboard envy ;)

LOL...sure they do. There are plenty of people who say they are going to write a book, and instead of sitting down with good old pen and paper to outline and write they make excuses. "Oh, I'll write the book soon...after I get my $5000 dollar Mac Pro and Apple Cinema monitors so I can do it right." LOL. It happens :)

Exactly -- a separate text section where you can list what you want could work, but maintaining a database of every program, version, package, and plugin is (IMO) highly impractical, especially given the recent amount of site updating that's been going on ...

For now, why not list stuff in the bio section; then copy/paste if the new field somehow materializes.

I dunno... I think we should be less about gear but it is a popular topic.....
