I work with a local book publisher that has recently learned he is temporarily relocating to Vietnam for three months. He wants to continue working on his books with me, so that means we need to find a way to get the files to each other. The files are 95% image files, and currently we just hand deliver via flash drive. Free is always ideal, but efficient and reliable is really what is most important. Any suggestions on how to do this over great distance? Websites, software, etc?

If they are less than 2GB - for free version, try Dropbox.com .. its the easiest/fastest way to sync files I have found so far.

ETA: In a nutshell - you and your publisher download Dropbox and login using the same id you can share a specific folder(s) to his email id. Anything that you put in a specified folder(s), gets synced both online and on his computer.

ETA2: Disclaimer - link has a referral code, both you and me get 250MB more space. Not that I need it right now, but I won't say no if they want to give it :)

Yeah, I've heard a lot of good things about dropbox as well. I'm going to try out the free version - they have software available for mac, pc, linux, iphone and android, as well as a web interface.

+1 for Dropbox. It's well known and well supported. Lots of aftermarket extensions and uses for it.

Another option is the free level of service from Yousendit. It's easy for a one-time transfer of a file because you don't need the other party to establish an account just to retrieve a file. Free accounts have a 100Mb file size limitation.

I agree...I also have a Dropbox account that I use to share large files etc. Seems to work well.

Dropbox is good, but don't forget Google has a document share - edit function (I've never tried it though).

just to note, dropbox doesn't use a secure http protocol (https), so if you are using dropbox with a wifi laptop on a unsecure or public connection, your sharing is open to anyone with the means to get to it.

Thanks for the suggestions. Sounds like Dropbox is where I'll end up.

lindalee turned me on to yousendit and they are over the top about security.

i use bluehost.com as my webhost, and through them i have unlimited ftp. (i only mention this because it's $10 cheaper than yousendit).
