help, its starting to look like the one we've just had,
advertising.. any suggestions?
07/11/2004 11:00:52 AM · #2
...no...I'm at a loss myself! I thought it might begin to be like the advertising challenge. Glad I'm not the only one who thought that. I am having one of those "artist's block" experiences, I suppose! LOL

Got any local statues or monuments with words engraved? That might get you started. If I were in NYC I'd go for the new monument in Roosevelt Park that is a tribute to American Nobel Prize winners... But I'm sure there is something where you live. Ann

For a change I managed to think up two or three ideas, and have even shot one of them.

A place to find some interesting words is on
license plates

Yes - here's an idea:
Pick several daisies. Pull off all the petals and form the word(s) 'no' out of the petals on one side of whatever backdrop/background of your choice. Also form the word(s) 'yes' on the other side. Place daisy head in centre (leaving just one petal left on it). Title the pic 'loves me?' Didn't have time myself - would love to see how it might turn out though. Perhaps other dpcer's might want to?
(Just a crazy idea though eh?)

Oh!! I have an idea!! Now...how to pull it off in the next 48 hours...hmmmm... LOL

I know - would take ages and ages - assuming you could find enough daisies in the first place?

Ya know it just seems like this month's challenges are lasting forever....anybody else feel that way?

You can do a lot of things with this word challenge. From what I hear, a lot of people are doing monuments.. and they're looking really good! If anyone is stuck with no ideas, I would suggest looking at motivational quotes, and trying to work them into something.. like getting someone elderly, reading that poem with "do not go gentle into that deep night (or sleep? I forget)" Or that picture that was in the top three of a recent challenge, with the blocks on the speaker spelling out "loud" in the air. You an find words in a lot of places! I had one idea I thought was great, You get maybe a father and his child, or a couple, something like that, and take a pic of them thru the mirror on your car, with "objects in mirror are closer than they appear" on the bottom. I tried it, it's not easy to do.. If I see that in the challenge, I'll definitely be very impressed!

Well Decals on cars are always interesting...I wonder if anybody will have bumper stickers or something of the like?

I don't think the liscense plate counts cuz its not actually a word but just letters. For this challenge I was gonna shoot the guy at the airport with the sign that reads "Welcome to Canada. If you don't like our rules, we'll change them."

Haha.. I'd like to see that one..

I have short poem on words want to see it?
07/11/2004 07:57:07 PM · #14
of course we do...show us!!!

Here's one of my favorite poems about words...

Pretty Words

Poets make pets of pretty, docile words:
I love smooth words, like gold-enamelled fish
Which circle slowly with a silken swish,
And tender ones, like downy-feathered birds:
Words shy and dappled, deep-eyed deer in herds,
Come to my hand, and playful if I wish,
Or purring softly at a silver dish,
Blue Persian kittens fed on cream and curds.

I love bright words, words up and singing early;
Words that are luminous in the dark, and sing;
Warm lazy words, white cattle under trees;
I love words opalescent, cool, and pearly,
Like midsummer moths, and honied words like bees,
Gilded and sticky, with a little sting.

Here I set and ponder
Trying to write down words
And my mind starts to wonder

Upstairs its all a jumble
Trying to think what comes to mind
My eyes start to stumble

In my chair and dreaming
Thinking of what to do next
The words come a streaming

Wake with a freash mind
But in my head I can't think
Of the words I left behind

Here I set and ponder
Trying to write down words
And my mind starts to wonder

Very close ...

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

--Dylan Thomas (1914 - 1953), Collected poems (1952)

Many license plates contain complete words, especially when you apply the same spelling rules as seem to reign on the internet:

I'm not suggesting any of these would make great entries, just "appropriate" ones :)

Unfortunately I won't have one until my birthday...in October...so that's out of the question. But that's a great idea! :o)

So do you think that there has to be more than 1 word in the frame? I stumbled upon a neat shot this afternoon and submitted it. I read this thread and wondered why folks were stuck and realized that maybe it's because "Words" is plural??

Tell me I'm in for a "doesn't meet the challenge" ;(

My image is done, submitted. Very pleased with it!
Boy I was stuck for like four/five days then all of a sudden I got a
several ideas out of nowhere.
I hope this one will make up for my purple debacle!

I finally got my image in today. On the 8th, Windows 2000 corrupted the CF card my shots from the location were on, I recovered them... but then my RAID controller failed (fixed today). Phew.
