Last challenge I entered was 8/31/2010. Should have kept it that way.

This was a 6+ when I woke up. Based on the voting trends lately, I expect this to end at about a 5.3. Hope I'm wrong.

Mine's lost 0.2 in the last 5 votes too. Still can't complain though.

Two good comments out of 19 votes is a good sign!

Saw some folks that didn't care much for it overnight and dropped quite a bit from a low 6.

Ouch. So much for being my best for the month of February.

sad and disappointed with this one. looks my goal of 4 6s in a row once again is going to slip away.

Looks like all the high voters are on a break lately! Dropped from 6.3 this morning :(

Had a 4.8 early on last night but I'm up the 6.37 with 4 comments which is just fine.

Very pleased with the number of comments considering the number of votes to date...

Not seeing much love this morning. Didn't expect this would have the broad appeal to hold that early 6+.

Wow. 0.5 drop since earlier. You did predict it. I wonder if you were lying earlier ;)

Mine's holding up very nicely.

I trust it will go up some, but I really didn't expect a 6 from this one. Hoping to pull in some good comments from those that do like this sort of thing.

In the 4s on this one. That's what I get for entering what I love instead of what DPCers love, HARUMPH!!!
03/01/2011 12:31:37 PM · #95
Yes, that's the problem. I went for a DPCers friendly shot this time, but if it holds a 6, I am getting close to my goal for 2011. After that I will accept 4s and post what I like!

How do you describe a DPC friendly image? This is a serious question. Thanks.

Johanna I ask you the same question as posted below: how do you describe a DPCers love? And who are "they" if not us? The majority does not participate to forums? Just curious. Btw, my score is 31/5.54/0 comments

My score held overnight. Very happy with both the score and number of comments this early on

You know, it isn't any ONE thing mariuca, because there are always exceptions. The easiest way to try and figure it out is to go through the challenge archives and view all the winners. They tend to be, above all, a very clear subject/theme, exceptionally lit, perfectly edited, etc. As Paul ( ubique) likes to say, they are completely finished, beautiful images, but generally don't leave much to the "imagination", and usually don't provoke introspection or questioning (beyond "how did they do that").

As to whether "they" are not in fact "us", is a good question. Not everyone who votes is participating in the challenge. And the number of members who enjoy "posthumous", experimental imagery (both creating it and appreciating it) is quite small, percentage-wise. Since most people aim for "perfection" in their photography, the competition is MUCH greater, so the images have to be that much better than the others to stand out. In this case, "better" is described as above.

Technical perfection, very sharp, no blurring, beautiful and peaceful subject in one of the following categories:

1. landscapes, preferably with sunset/sunrise/golden colors, blurred water is a bonus here
2. cute babies, animals with technical perfection - birds, kittens, horses do well
3. subjects difficult to photograph well - lightning, liquid droplets, auroras, night shots
4. flowers with perfect DOF

There are a few more but the bottom line is that technical perfection rates higher than artistic merit. This is most likely because a high percentage of DPCers comes from technical background (IT is particularly common).
