Hey folks,

I'm looking to purchase a battery grip for my Canon 550D Rebel T2i. The canon brand is around $150, whereas generic brands are in the $30-40 range.

I'm not a professional photographer, just want the extra grip for ease of use when I switch from landscape to portrait orientation, and the extra battery slot never hurts.

Is there anything wrong with getting the generic (eg. Opteka) brands, or is a battery grip not something you'd want to mess with by going with anything but Canon?

If anyone is currently using a non-Canon brand grip, would they recommend it?

My Polaroid grip is fine on the 50D, except that once in a while the sun or other lights seem to trigger the darn infrared remote switch... =\

I have a Phottix brand grip on my 5dII and love it! Very solid and looks and acts identical to the canon brand. Nothing but praise for this company. Especially when an original grip, is $429 can. Yeah, just crazy if you ask me. Add two batteries and now your at $700 +.
Yeah, I love my $90 Phottix!

Zeikos makes a pretty good grip for the canons I had one for my 7D and really liked it.

I have the Zeikos on my 5D MkII. Great grip, very happy with it.

I was given a Bower brand grip for my 50D as a Christmas gift. Works just fine.

Hard to know what the difference is between the brands eg. Zeikos vs Opteka.

While we're on topic, what about generic brand batteries? Any recommendations?

I bought some Sterlingtek batteries recently on the recommendation of some folks here and in the Canon DSLR group on Flickr. They work great.

Spiff:
a)do they hold a charge for the same period of time, and
b) does the camera charge indicator correctly monitor battery life with these batteries (or does it just go from full to empty?

They seem to function just as well as the OEM batteries. Actually, the ones I have for my 50D hold a lot more power and last much longer.

I also purchased the Phottix brand batteries for my grip. These have been performing, just like the original brand batteries.
Possibly better, as they have a higher mah ratting. I found the grip and batteries, through a local seller. Do a search for Phottix and you should find them. Also do a search for Phottix battery grip review. Before I bought mine, I found a great review. It showed pics and was well written. Hopefully you will find it. As this made my decision easy to purchase this item.
