I think it was just a point of being too close to the "6" mark that killed the vote. The shot just didn't "wow" enough 7+ votes and continuously got drug down by 6 votes.

Is this not entering the same photo in two different challenge?

Agree with the concept that people get used to things. What impresses me has changed a lot since I started on DPC. But it also happens to the blurry moody stuff that you like. If people start appreciating it, then it soon becomes a cliche "seen it before" kind of image.

Different frame from the same session. Even though it looks the same, it's not the same image. Perhaps a technicality, but perfectly legit.

Really? Those blurry, grainy "arty" shots you like seem to keep popping up in every challenge.

I am going to rant just a little.

This is my entry and I knew before I entered it that it would get hammered by voters, I was obviously okay with that. When I was looking through my shots from 2010 trying to decide which shot to use I kept coming back to this one because I liked it. I liked the motion and especially the colors.
I could have entered a couple of different landscape shots or mediocre portrait shots, but they would have just been poor examples of those types of shots. There would have been countless better examples of those and I would have scored a low 5 or sub 5 with them anyway. I understand my limits as a photographer right now, truly I don't even consider myself a photographer, I am an amateur picture taker.
So, as I considered all these things I decided to enter the one shot I was considering that I knew would not just be a poor example of other shots. Some might say "then why enter anything at all?" but the point of this site is not just to get better but also to share photos you think others will enjoy, and while I knew that the majority would not particularly care for my entry, I thought there would be at least a few that would enjoy it. That theory was proven true by the comments I received(aside from one that is).

Just a little insight on how an amateur picture taker decides to enter a challenge as big as a "Best of" on a site full of amazing photographers.

First of all - nice photo - I gave it a score above its average because I too, liked it.

Now imagine going to the park on a Sunday afternoon. A great jazz quartet is going to be playing soft jazz in the gazebo. It's sunny and pleasantly warm. The audience has a relaxed musical temperament and has perhaps more gray in their hair than any other color. Got the Picture? And when the musicians began to play, out comes crude, sexually explicit, over-amped, heavy metal rock you can hear in the next county. Not many of the audience like it that much.

It's not that the music is bad, it's just different than what the audience has come to expect and appreciate.

Your picture isn't bad. In fact it is a pleasing and highly competent abstract.

You said it yourself, "I knew that the majority would not particularly care for my entry"

Abstract is a genre not expected nor well appreciated here at DPC. Posthumous has demonstrated with his awards that tastes can change and that the DPC audience can expand their appreciation of abstract images. In the mean time, keep shooting what you love. Some of us do appreciate it!

wow cut her some slack man, everyone finds something they enjoy and like to shoot. a lot of people think i enter too many shots of sofia, but i wont quit, we work well together and shes a great model. fiora found something she enjoys, mixing the creativity of drawing and photography. i like your pov and much of your work, but i would submit you are not the "dean" of creative photography

Um ... she asked why her score went down, and I gave her a possible reason. But I am glad that you and Karen were able to vent some of that resentment. It's good for the soul.

and btw, if you think i am resentful of anything then you didn't read my post very carefully

Thanks for the kind words. And I want to be clear that I was in no way complaining about my score. It scored about where I thought it would and I was fine with that. My post was in regards to one comment I had that basically questioned my even entering that shot into the challenge. I just wanted to clarify my reasons for entering that particular shot.

Again, thanks for appreciating my photo for what it was.

This photo was taken about 2 weeks after I got my new camera. Prior to this, taking pictures was something else most cell phones could do. I thought this was one of the best captures I have made, to date. What could have made this better - capture wise, framing, composing, post-editing, etc . . .

I have thick skin - thanks for the help!!

i gave it a 6 but should've been at least a 7. i should review my votes more often.

typical dpc voter would think it was "washed out." I gave it an 8.

I wasn't disappointed in the score on my entry; I'm still shooting and entering what I want. I had just hoped to connect with some folks and get more comments.

But I did get some. :)

Sub-six, really? I'm guessing most people that voted it under a 5 can't even turn on my light meter. It's ok though, I got paid...

I gave this a 6. Personally, I found the Jim Beam sign and white poster-board distracting. The lighting I though was generally good but was a bit distracted by the bright areas on the chair and reflection off the shoe. I also did not care for the left leg being cut off at the knee and the loss of toes on the right foot. Hope this helps. The lack of catch-light in the model's eyes also failed to hold my attention. It just didn't feel like she really connected with the camera and this shot was nothing more for me than a little eye candy. Just my 2 cents.

Im pretty new on here so the 17 votes 4 and under with two 1's has me a little confused. Big thanks to those that commented though.

not complaining at all.. i just found my scoring graph very interesting for this shot. more 7s than any other score, and almost 50% of the votes were 6s or 7s, yet it still finished in the 5s.

That IS an interesting voting breakdown. I'd say you nailed it.
