Well I haven't quite got the photoshop thing down yet. Just want some opinions as to what I can do or shouldn't have done to make this photo better.

Here is the original only resized.

Here is one I played with.

And another.

Thanks for any input in advance. Hopefully someone will give me some. :)

They look great on my monitor (and it's my bad one at work). I will be interested in reading what some fo the PS talents here have to give you in the way of advice to become even better. But I think you are doing great!

It helps to start with a great image. :)

I like the first image. I like the second one better. The desaturated one is nice in an Ansel Adams sort of way but not as appealing to me as the second. If God hadn't intended us to use color, Eastman Kodak wouldn't have invented it.

I like that you didn't do TOO MUCH to the photos. Great job.

I hope you don't mind that I played with your image some. I balanced the color to eliminate what I was seeing as a bluish cast, rotated slightly, and cropped.

The colors and contrast in the 1st version are a bit dull. The 2nd version is much brighter, but you lost much of the detail in the clouds and trees. Somewhere in between would probably look nicer. You might also try cropping out some of the sky to get the horizon closer to the upper third line.

P.S. You could also try Heida’s Burninator technique. If done correctly it can make a blah photo more dramatic, clouds more forbidding looking, etc. However, it usually makes photos too somber and moody looking for my taste though.

I really like the photo, think it has very good potential. As previously posted, the colors were a little flat in the original, but bumping up the contrast tends to blow out the coouds. Here's a qick edit:

OK, it wasn't as quick as I intended... I first burned the clouds to darken them a little, then ran leves & curves to incrase contrast, get a good black & white point & tweak color balance. Then I ran shadow/highlight & dodged trees on shoreline a bit. Sharpened a little, cropped a little from the bottom, expanded the sky a bit upward, and worked on the sky with burn & dodge (just a bit of da burninator), ran NeatImage on the sky (gently). Selected mountain area and selectively increased contrast. Finally, ran hue/saturation.
At various points I used "quick mask" mode to mask off parts of the image to make adjustments, e.g. when I ran NI on sky.
All told, about 15 minutes.

Thanks kirbic, that is a great job, now I just need to try that myself on the original big one. Thanks for posting all the steps you did, that helps a lot. I am newbie when it comes to photoshop as you can probably tell. :)
