Since a few people asked about this
I will post my edeting steps on my Angel picture
Here is the original

I start out cloning some sencor dust out from the sky
And then adjustment layers first levels
I selected the face and hands together and adjusted the levels
Then selected the dress and - levels
Then select the sky - levels
Then ground - levels
Ok and then I BURN
I selected the sky and use the burn tool on it So it will not go on her
And select the dress again and burn it a little too
Some burning in the ground too
And dodged the right part of the sky where it meets the earth

I think the trick is to make it not too obvoius the burn marks
Like on this picture:

I think I messed it up there cause the burn marks are too obvious
But I say Never bee afraid to burn too much you can always go back
So I try to burn most around the edges and then less on the inside
I always keep the burning tool at 7% opacity
then you can burn little at a time And I have the burning brush Big.

Then I reselect the selection from each adjustment layer
and do a color balance adjustment layes for each one
Then I did a brightness/contrast layer for the ground and lessen the contrast and darken it a bit
And this is how it should look like then:

I think its the most edited picture I have sent in for sure
I shot it on 6.june and finished edeting it right before deadline
So Mabey not the whole time of the month went to it :p
But I learned a lot from it
And I had my critiquer tyt2000 to help me out
Well I hope somebody reads this Cause I had to do a lot of thinking while writing this :p hehe
Thanks for the ribbon

I'll pretend for now, too, but I printed it and will someday conquer it! THANK YOU, Heida!!

Oh, I read it! Thanks a lot. I hadn't ever used levels as extensively as you did, and as micro-selectively. I'll hafta try that technique out!

Whatever your method, Heida, the result is spectacular!

Interesting reading.

And to think some thought my June Free Study shot belonged in a Photoshop competition. (All I did was invert the colors...)

LOL

When will you put up a print? :)

Heida,

I tried your tutorial, but think I burnt it too much!

Sorry, couldn't pass it up. You did say burn away! LOL

May be a little redundant, but Congrats again on YOUR stunning image. Your time spent on it shows.

Note: If this is insulting or offending in any way, I will dump the shot and re-edit this.

Thanks Heida , great explanation, it will stimulate me to see whether I can improve some of my images by some more local editing.

I think it is important we should not to try to copy and we should realise you have your own unique style and, as this image shows, you have your own great idea's to get to a great image in the first place.

Stunning.

Wow! Thanks for posting the original and showing the steps. You could write a "How'd They Do That" for it, since it's practically already written.

Although heida is good, Trogdor is the ultimate burninator! (If you haven't seen it, be sure to watch the whole thing.)

Well, I read it, and I understand it, but for you it seems to be so easy to make a GREAT shot. That is what I can't still figure out.

Very nice summary! A couple of things you might add if you make this an "offical" How-To article:

1. Mention the technique you use to make the four selections you describe.

2. What is your input device? I highly recommend a stylus/tablet for this, with mouse, trackball and trackpads decreasingly effective.

Thanks Heida! I am going to try something like this with one of my photos.

Dodge is the opposite of burn; use it to lighten areas that are too dark.

Sponge is used to saturate or desaturate colors in spacific areas of the image. For example, if something in the background has such a bright color that it distracts from the image you can use sponge to make its color less intense.
