Blame Yo_spiff - I think he got tired of my pestering and foisted me off on you folks...
I've been a member since 2007, and my highest score so far is a 6.3765. I also have a 6.3063, and a 6.0061 - for a total of 3 above 6.0000. The rest of my top 11 are 5.8974 and above. My overall average score is 4.9200 over 351 challenges.
I am totally bummed about dpchallenge. I have had one entry above 5.0000 this year so far (and one below 4.0000, so I guess that's fair), and my best shot of 2010 just finished in the bottom 10 - yes, 417th out of 426 entries! And I thought it was a good shot, and well edited.
Now, I do have some excuses - I broke my leg 04-Jan, and have not been able to really go out and do any shooting. I just started driving again last week, and may lose the air cast in another week or two, so maybe that'll get better. Also, the weather has been really bad in Indiana this winter, which further limits the desire / ability to be outdoors - especially with a bum leg.
I have no clue what I'm doing wrong - I seem to fight with the camera to get shots in sharp focus. Mostly, I seem to get extremely narrow DOF, with the focus on the wrong part of the shot. I've even gone to doing manual focus rather than rely on autofocus. Even when i get a decent shot from the camera, I almost always get comments about it being out of focus, or too soft.
Maybe some overall comments on my portfolio - does anything stand out as being a pattern? a mistake I'm repeating over and over? Or am I just making a new mistake with each entry, trying to cover all the possibilities?
I am willing, for what it is worth, to give feedback / impressions / opinion on your pictures.

Hi, David, I think your Tamron lens could be partially to blame. I had the same lens and it tends to be not very good at either end. After I got 70-200mm I was amazed with the difference in sharpness at 200. The other suggestion could be to look at creative cropping ideas. In some cases your photos would benefit from tighter crops to give them a more focused theme. Hope this helps.

I've never solicited pre challenge advice about what/whether to enter but I spend ridiculous amounts of time agonizing over the relative merits of shots or edits - usually for little ultimate reward, lol - so I think maybe I should consider taking some of you up on your offers to look. Of course this means that I am also willing to look at other peoples' alternative options, but I wonder how well I am qualified to give advice given my own indecisiveness and mediocre record.

Hi David,

Your portrait in the best of challenge is a beautiful catch. I love the intensity and the hair falling over the eyes.

There are two problems that I can see:

1. Your focus. The focus is soft, yet it comes off as out of focus more than soft focus. I noticed that you had topaz denoise. Do you have topaz adjust or detail? If you're having problems with the focus, it might help to have some sort of good sharpening program. I'm guessing the majority of points were lost because of your focus.

2. Also, ja-9 was correct -- it is a bit flat. Her hair looks grey instead of a nice rich color with bright highlights where the light hits. This can be fixed with curves.

Also, cropping it down just a bit to move the eyes up to the thirds line brings a little more focus to the eyes.

Here are two edits on the shot -- trying to get it a little sharper and bring out the richness. (It still has focus problems, but you could probably do more with the eyes on a larger image. That's the most important thing to have in focus. People are forgiving about other parts as long as the eyes are in focus.)

One of the best things to do is to use this thread for feedback before the challenge. I've had a number of shots that I've been able to improve by getting feedback before hand. There are some talented, helpful people in this thread who are happy to help. If you ask for feedback, make sure you let them(us) know that you're wanting technical feedback as well. :)

I think it is often much easier to be objective about others work than ones own.

BUMP

To remind people that I am freely available for this purpose, no need to ask, just fire a PM. I'll answer as soon as I see it. I'm not always HERE, but as soon as I see the message I'll take a peep.

along the same lines as Robert's post, I'm freely available to offer feedback. A PM is best. I don't monitor this thread, but I do respond to PMs.

Who's up for looking at some potentially mediocre candidates for the Urban Nature challenge?
03/19/2011 03:00:17 PM · #149
Could anyone take a look at my 'focal point' options?

thanks
