I mean side challenges

the first post in each side challenge will explain it, it's whatever you want

OK, for example B&W says:
"Anyone interested in a b/w side challenge? If so, please start posting your images here!"
so is it a way of sharing images or is there some scoring system?

No scores. Just comments. Which is why they're so much fun.

Think of them more as a "topic of the month". You can feel free to experiment and see what works without worrying that someone will slap you with low votes. No editing rules either.

OK, that means recent photos. I got it wrong with B&W side challenge.

I don't think you're getting it. This site never set up any rules for side challenges. When someone has an idea for a side challenge they will list what they would like the rules to be in the original post, but they are not hard and fast rules. Just about everyone who starts a side challenge does not care how many join, how close the rules are obeyed and if someone joins after it's started, well, the more the merrier.
Often times they don't care when the shot was taken as many times the challenges have to do with a particular type of editing. So go have fun, people like the side challenges because of the casual nature.

Now I get it, smard az! ;) That's great - let no rules rule!

Really the only thing that runs across all side-challenges is that it is hoped that participants comment on the other photos that are posted - either C&C or a more emotional response to the photo, depending on the challenge or photograph.

As others have already said, it not necessary to use recent shots unless the topic requires it. In fact, that suggests a side challenge to me. I'll post it shortly.

Careful though...side challenges can get expensive. I bought a macro lens just for the side challenge. :)

Yes, without the comments the participants seem to drop off. I mean, why post if no one cares, right? LOL! Depending on how many people are in it, sometimes it can get overwhelming to comment on everything. I'd suggest you give at least as many comments as you get each day.
