Original of each challenge photo must be uploaded regardless their standing. All originals will be accessible after the challenge is over via a link says "See original"

Doing so will force people to take better photos... how?

...open for discussion.

Inspired by this post.

I really like the idea -- however, I think it's a bad one.

I like the idea, because I would love to see how much is photography from the camera vs post processing. I would learn a huge amount on what could be done, and it would be an excellent sharing opportunity.

HOWEVER, I think it's a bad idea because I can hear the "That photo should have been DQ'd!!!" rants. It will get mean and ugly.

Maybe we could have a link like that but make it optional to upload one?
I think a lot people would use it and I do love the opportunity to look at before and afters, but I agree that it could turn into a DQ nightmare. There is a reason only the top 5 HAVE to submit....so that the SC doesn't have to do an unreasonable amount of work checking originals.

I suppose there may be server space ramifications and also my originals weigh in at 21Mb+, not fantastically convenient to have to upload those files all the time.

I can't see how this would have any impact on the quality of photo at all.

Mainly though, and this is a deal breaker, I can think of some nude work whereby I have been able to preserve the model's modesty in my final edit. I don't think it would be fair or right to get the original out there for all to see.

Also, when you consider that challenge entries are limited to 300K, whist RAW originals are in the 10s of megabytes, it's a pretty serious increased demand for storage space on the part of the site. And originals that are not JPG can't be displayed anyway...

So would the suggestion be to REQUIRE an unprocessed, same-size JPG be submitted alongside the actual entry?

For me, the big danger here (aside from possible untrammeled vigilante behavior) would be the reinforcing of cliques, where people would divide into camps regarding what's "real" and what's "all post" and mouth off at each other LOL. (We all know where my work would fall in that continuum...)

maybe they should just be made available to me. I'll agree not to comment on real vs photoshopped and won't request any DQs. :D

Actually -- since the before and afters are already there for the ribbons & HMs. Making those 5 available would be fascinating. Because of storage space, they probably couldn't keep them forever, but making them available for a couple of weeks would be great.

Originals can be transformed into a smaller size jpgs after upload is done. I don't think it would be wise to keep raw or large files just to ease our curiosity :-|

I think seeing the original really helps me learn from the experts... some of the transformations from before to after are also really inspirational to me.

Although it would definitely be an interesting exercise, and a way to see what is possible in editing, I concur that such a requirement would negatively impact the DPC community without serving any real purpose, except empower all of us feel we are part of the SC when it comes to validating images.

I disagree -- I think it would serve an incredible purpose. To see what can be done to a photo. For the few before and afters I've seen, there were already techniques of which I knew nothing. It would open some wonderful discussions.

And for each portrait one should also have to post a picture with the same pose, but with the nude model

Love the idea.

But the killer is that the originals are hundreds of times larger than the submissions. I'm sure this need for more storage would be way too expensive for the site to be able to afford.

I like this idea as well, it would be fun to learn from some master photographers. However, some people do not like to share their secrets, and I don't think they should be forced to either. I love it when someone is willing to share, but I also understand that there are some tricks to the trade, people would rather keep to themselves.

How about a challenge this month that requires all entries to submit the original? An advanced challenge with "additional details" in the description that the original must be submitted for viewing after the challenge subsides. I agree that this would be a great way for others to see the before and after as well as studying from some of the fantastic PS'ers we have on DPC.

Added bonus would be if the editing steps were listed as well!

May be this could work if it was kept at the voluntary level. Perhaps a thread like the Outtakes could be generated after each challenge for resized originals?

I agree but at the same time disagree. It's just as easy to submit the original as it is to upload the challenge entry. It would be a matter of 100 or so originals so it shouldn't be an issue with DPC's server being able to handle to uploads. I say we try it ONCE and if it busts it busts. DPC has my vote for a trial "additional details" challenge.

I don't know... I like the educational opportunity of it, but agree that it could easily turn to vilification. I'm also not sure I agree with making it necessary to detail the creation process either. Photography is about depicting something exclusive of its context, and even in documentary photography, is still directed at depicting things in a desired fashion. The timing, the composition, the abstraction from the scene, these are all central to photography, and the product is what is notable. Introducing and detailing the process derails some of the wonder and efficacy. Art of every kind is about a conveyance of message, expression; does this remain intact through dissection? I would argue it does not.
Personally, I'm also of the view that a lot can be gained through one's own experimentation and attempts to accomplish something in a fashion they can manage. Having solutions spelled out, instead of finding our own way, can be detrimental. I'm an advocate for giving the tools, and giving the technique, but connect the dot creation instructions misses the mark, IMO. I've no issue with people explaining setups, that is their own prerogative, but I don't support any requirement or expectation.

Indeed. And it's already available on a voluntary basis, isn't it? PM the photographer and ask to see the original.

I don't see any need to make this a rule.
