There are some people about that vote ones'. Yes, most of the entries are top contenders, but I have not seen a one or a two. The majority are competent shots. Like, what do these voters accomplish except to throw a monkey wrench out of spite. It seems these folks name themselves purgers. Hey, Always look at your average voting stats. If you are getting more than what you are giving and this disparity is large, why not look in your soul?

Even with a known 10 vote... this is the worst I've started in my first 4 challenges!

I thought I had a top 20 finisher.

I'm sitting at a 5.1, my highest so far, but I thought my picture was straight out of a top magazine, so I'm a bit disappointed.

Partially the same here. There was NOTHING said about having to have a brand name and I'm getting marked down for it??? WHAT??

Bah, and I hate taking "studio" shots because a) I don't have a studio and b) I prefer candid, "there" shots. *sighs* If I say anymore someone will know my photo...

This is my 4th challenge and it seems to me that my score after 100 votes is quite close to what I recieve as my final score.
Anyone else track their scores?

Hoping to finish above a 5. Thought my idea was good, but was rushed to finish in time to submit. Gotten some good suggestions for improvement already. Thanks,

*nods* I do! I copy & paste it each hour into a WordPad document. It's really interesting to look at it after the fact and see the changes. But, after the last two challenges ("Extraordinary" and "June Free Study"), the first two I have mostly successfully tracked, I am interested to see what happens in this one. They started low and consistantly raised throughout the week, so...I should end up with a 5.0 or so in this one (I have a 4.6 right now). -_-

That's pretty much the case. But I've been noticing my score climb slightly throughout the week. The portait challenge went up from about 4.4-ish and ended up at 5.0. My June Study pic has gone from 5.3 in the beginning to a 5.8 today. So hang in there, it may still climb.

Im at 6.02 which is the best out of my 4 submissions so far but that is a decline from 6.5 this morning.
I had to crop more that i wanted to because of some dirt i didnt see under a railing before i left my location.
I KNOW it is hurting my submission.
OOH WELL!

I got one comment that said "Would have scored higher if all 640 pixels were used" I am so confused on entering photos. I tried making it bigger, but you can't go over 150 kb? HOw the hell does everyone get their pictures so big without going over the file size??? Sooooo confused.
07/07/2004 04:56:18 PM · #68
Change the image size to 640 and then "save for web" at 150 or less.

You might want to search to forums too...

As tyt2000 said, use "Save for Web" in photoshop and then adjust the JPEG quality until you're under 150KB. Whatever image editor you use, it should have some option to adjust the quality of the JPEG output file.

WOW I'm actually above a 6! first time ever... I'm sure I'll drop like a stone, but it's fun sitting above the 50% line for a change. I tend to edit too much, and being a "Basic Editing" challenge held me back... these were my other attempts -- but that was befor I realized it was basic editing... ( I didn't go with liquor after all)

What do you think of these?

not bad for me the only pic i had to break the 5's was my first ever pic, to be honest, I did think it would score a bit higher but all i got was a demand to verify my image that i promptly submitted.

There's a key ingredient missing from this challenge though and that's context. Normally, all ads will be targeted to an audience. They will be seen in publications or at sites that advertisers will have spent time and money to ensure their audience will respond to.

In order to accurately judge these entries one needs to bear in mind that the shot would ordinarily be featured alongside some appropriate text and with a message. Not all subjects will appeal to all of the people all of the time - quite deliberately. Although the brief states that the image should appeal to DPC voters, I think allowance should be made for product targeting and evaluated with this in mind.

I'd ask myself 'Do I think this is a good image for promoting the subject to people who might like it - or, more importantly, to those who don't normally?'.

The art of a good ad is not to preach to the converted, but to convert per se, or reinforce existing 'product' values.

Wow...

Right now it looks like I haven't improved my skills even slightly from my last (and first) submission. As it stands now, this challenge is scoring just about identical to the first challenge I was in...

I'd have to agree with Imagineer, ironically. The results I'm seeing are very contrary to what I'd expected. Advertising is my 4th challenge and I'm scoring lower. Even though I think as part of an ad campaign my shot would do very well.
