I have photoshop but since I am not doing much serious shooting I play around in Picasa a lot and find it a great tool for red eye removal and some simple photo editing (decent warming filter too).

I have been getting back into black and white and just noticed the "Filtered Black and White" option. This is a great tool that lets you choose a color filter and strength to use to filter the photo to black and white. Just move the mouse around the color chart to see the changes real-time.

This doesn't say much more about it then I just did.

I guess you can't use it on challenge entries though....

Why not? B/W conversion via channel mixer, which is basically what these filters are doing, is legal in DPC Challenges. Basic and Advanced both. I read their description and as far as I can see it's fine.

I read on here that Picasa modifies the Exif files.

That's if you use it to download the files. If you manually transfer them to a host directory and then copy them before working on them you won't have a problem with that. It's really the only safe way to work if you don't use RAW.

ETA: actually, ANY program modifies the EXIF when you work on a JPG file; this is why you need to work on a copy if you want to keep an untouched original. It's apparently the case that Picasa actually modifies the files in the act of transferring them from card to computer, which is why you need to use old reliable windows file transfer for that purpose.

If you are using Picasa, I'd recommend you put a READ ONLY tag on all files Picasa touches. It will save any information it needs to in auxiliary files. I've verified this works by comparing the MD5 has as the binary set to assure no modification via a read only tag.

Bear_Music I have a question for you.

You said:"ETA: actually, ANY program modifies the EXIF when you work on a JPG file; this is why you need to work on a copy if you want to keep an untouched original."

When I am editing my photo's in photoshop, I pull up the original, edit it, and then use SAVE AS to save the image. When doing that, I am not really modifiying the original... correct?

That's true, as long as you never forget to Save As instead of Save. One mistake, and your original is gone.

ETA: You need to "Save as" as the very first step, and of course only once, after which you can just save.

I have just found out that Picasa is behind all my modified files. I don't upload from camera directly to Picasa, and it doesn't automatically modify my files. But tagging things e.g 'flowers' modifies the file. It's taken me ages to work out that's what did it. (Last night I added a 'roses' tag to something already tagged as 'flowers' and the modified date changed.) Nearly all of my old files that fall into categories that I've seen fit to tag are modified and I can't use them. Raw files are okay, even when tagged, so I still have some shots to choose from in the upcoming Flower challenge.
