Voters... this is NOT a rule of third challenge. Please go back and check your votes against the challenge. Out of balance photo should have two or more elements in it to make it unbalanced, background or space does not count as an element. Throwing balance of, you need an object thrown from the balance and other object that throws other object out of balance.

...visually that is.

can't wait for this challenge over already :-(

All I see is terrible pictures and I am usually not a negative person and I rarely give out 1's and 2's but if I start voting on this one, I'll dish out low votes to almost every entry. So I abstain! Will look at them again later on and if I see something worthwhile, maybe I'll vote. Right now, no!

I'm sorry we don't live up to your generous expectations. I’m looking forward to seeing you photo on the front page.
Will you also abstain if you feel most shots are too good? I would love to have your vote but more importantly, I would love your opinion as to why my shot is so poor as right now my two commenter’s have voted 8 & 6 but my score is:

Personally, I’m more interested in to the opinion of those that feel these shots are as wrong as to why those that like it. Actually, that’s not the truth. Give me more positive comments!

OK, sorry, this sort of comment is not normally my style and I’m sorry for any offence. I knew my shot would be either in the 6’s or 4’s so I shouldn’t be disappointed if it went the other way I’d had hoped. I can see why voter’s would go the way have they have gone so I should not have gone on the offensive. I appreciate it when someone decides not to vote on images they do not like and it’s not my place to criticise. Please disregard my previous response once again accept my apologies.

Actually, I thought my vote was my own... It seems like you are suggesting that we amend our opinion based on your interpretation of the challenge brief.

For what it's worth, having had a quick flick through, they look like a fine set of images. I look forward to voting on them later.

If there is a black and white challenge, and you come up saying "I entered color because that's what I believe", I think what "I" believe (black and white) would be the correct one.

Now, at the end of this one, I am not sure if I will see a winner or runner up that is truly what this challenge is all about.

I yet to see a good sample of "Out of balance" photo EVER...

I thought that too. Some have really achieved what I thought was impossible while others are too good to score them by DNMC alone.

You think the degree of agreement over what constitutes Black and White is similar to that relating to 'Out of Balance'??

I didn't expect voters here would understand the concept...

and I expect my views will be proven correct at the end of voting.

How does it balance with my expectations? Well I really didn't have expectations because I never quite could make sense of what fitted this challenge. An okay start:

Well, I think there are some brilliant ones in there and I think everyone made a great effort in this challenge

After 30 yrs of trying to shoot balanced images, I found this challenge a little daunting.

It has taken three years but I finally got my first DNMC comment..Cool!!

Can an unbalanced picture be a good picture? Is it possible to distinguish between a good picture and a DNMC? To me there are a few good ones because they DNMC. The unbalanced pictures are nothing to cheer about but they match the challenge. I entered a picture and it gets slammed not because it is a bad picture (I think) but because it DNMC. This is a difficult one and decided earlier that I am not going to vote but will maybe make a few comments.

After 19 votes i was sitting near to a seven and 4 comments, now after another eight votes and no more comments i'm just above 6.2, never dropped like that before, feeling dizzy.
I figure people aren't happy with what there getting & are dishing out crappy scores, or maybe i'm just feeling bitter & should calm down with the update button a bit.

i was doing OK and just dropped .40 in 3 votes.

It is so obvious that people have different opinions about what DNMC and what does. I have gotten comments already on both ends. I think it would be better to assume that we all tried to meet the challenge but that the description was a bit vague/open ended/whatever and we have to go with what WE see when voting.

To unbalance something, you need two things, one subject can not be unbalanced, because there is nothing to unbalance to (visually). I assume background or space cannot count as "things", if they do, then this challenge also should be consider as "rule of thirds". Is the technique "where your eyes go to", or "where else your eyes go to"?

I see no reason why a tiny subject located in the corner of a vast negative space would not be considered an "unbalanced" composition, so I disagree with you on this. It might not be the most creative approach, but it IS "unbalanced".

I really read up on what constitutes an unbalanced photo. Even went so far as to seek out the colors I thought would bring the best unbalance to my photo. I feel the photo was technically sound. Apparantely I was wrong.
