This was a difficult challenge for the voters I think. First of all, there probably aren't that many voting because of the holidays and second is there may be a bit of a problem (which I had as well and indicated in an earlier post) of deciding whether it fits the challenge. If there was a subject in the picture, and they are looking OUT- say thorough a door or window- is this a view from the outside looking in? The subject may be looking out but the viewer is on the outside looking in. I think in such cases, a photo may have been marked down in score because the voter felt it did not fit the challenge. The more ambiguous the subject for the challenge is, the more it is open to interpretation by the viewer (which is not necessarily a bad thing- it allows more creativity but it also means votes may be all over the place as well).

In general, I don't worry too much about the number scores themselves. They are meant to be relative to the other pictures in that one challenge only. A photo which wins a challenge with a six is not necessarily not as good as a photo which wins with an eight. What was important was how it did compared to the others. What IS the more important to me is the comments people post. This is where you get feedback on what is and isn't working. No comments means it was mediocre- not good, not bad. Unfortunately you don't learn what did or didn't work. In that case I would look at the ones which scored higher than you and see what they did differently. Or repost the picture in a thread and ask for more comments. In a different category it may be better than ones it was rated lower than. I have seen photos win prizes in national, serious competitions do poorly at local shows.

After time, you start to get a feel for what is popular (and that is basically what getting a high score means- not necessarily that it was a great photo- only that it appealed to a lot of people).

So don't stress over score numbers. Try to learn why and what you can do to improve. There is always the next challenge.
