Cool -- congratulations! Do they only want recent pictures, or anything astronomy-related?

Very cool shot. Tells a story. Almost looks like the moon was being eclipsed by our planet.

From that collection.

Thanks everyone!
GeneralE, I don't exactly know how they choose pictures for APOD. but they are not always recent pictures... Astronomy Picture of December 12 for instance, was there for 3rd time over last 11 years!
most of the times the picture suits the nearest astronomical event or news. for examples recent pictures, including today's, are related to Geminid Meteor Shower.
it's almost always astronomy- or aeronautics-related.

Hi,
i got this email yesterday asking for the right to use my photo. i've never been asked before for the right to use my photo... and don't know what to say to the guy! i've copied the email below. i don't know if he means he wants to pay me for it or not! i'm saving for a lens, so....!

My name is "** **" and I am a music composer in Kansas City, Missouri. I am putting together a performance of new, electronic music along with an astronomy presentation at the planetarium here in Kansas City. I would very much like to acquire the rights to use your photo "Contemplating the Sky" for our website //www.darkmatterkc.com as well as other promotional materials. We are a non-profit startup and do not have much money but would love to promote your photographs. Please let me know if we could come to an arrangement.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

what do you think i should say?

He does say "acquire", not "buy" or "purchase" — that, plus the statement that "We are a non-profit startup and do not have much money", is an indication that he's hoping for a donation. Then there's "but would love to promote your photos", meaning they'll give you a credit line, basically.

It's kind of up to you. How willing are you to help a composer you've never met promote HIMSELF in his own town, half a world away from yours, without any compensation other than feeling good for being a nice guy? 'Cuz that's probably what it boils down to.

It's a VERY nice picture, possibly one of some value from a stock footage perspective. It's possible you can engineer the "exposure" in such a way as to let people know the image is available for commercial usage?

Thanks Robert. very enlightening!
i now replied him and said that he can use it.

i can't understand your last line. what does exactly "engineer the "exposure" in such a way as to let people know the image is available for commercial usage?" mean?
