A few of us have got together to try and sell our landscape work. We've made our own website (//www.shutterjunkies.co.uk) but we're looking for some feedback.

Do you think we should make it look as "arty" as possible, or more like an easy to use, credible shop?

Also - what software do you use for your websites? I've use iWeb as it was free and already on my computer, but already finding it very limited. I need something where different people can upload new shots, over the Internet, at any time. Any ideas? I've heard of Joomla, anyone used that?

I'd prefer something simple and fast -- no animations, large easy-to-read type, search box, help/contact-us link ... I think you can make it look "classy" (rather than "arty") while keeping the bandwidth low and the picture quality high.

Make the pricing and shipping costs easy to find in advance of filling out an order.

Minimalism is key. Keep it basic and clean and you will almost always come out with the best results.

I agree that a minimalist approach is best. Your photos (especially being landscapes) should be the highlight of the website, don't distract with any flash or major design.

Thanks everyone.

In the site so far, I've kept a real minimalist feel, but unfortunately I'm going to have to change to a different format to open up some new functionality. I think that means using Joomla and Virtuemart, which looks a little bit more cluttered, but I'll see what we can do.

The biggest issue to me is the default navigation in the shop - As a customer I don't really care that x or y took the shot and after picking the shop having to pick an artist is a UI disaster IMO..... I just wanted - say - A nice tree with a sunset behind it. I would show them all together with a few variations... allow the customer to pick an artist (something like "more from Dave" on the detail screen after the have an image of interest). I MIGHT think about the default nav been themes - you know - summer sunsets, winter seas or whatever.... but only maybe... not sure how many images you plan for e.t.c.

I'd go for Wordpress + some payment gateway, like Paypal.

You could use this theme: photocrati.com (costs $79) *Good* or prophotoblogs.com ($199) *Better*

There are some free themes, available as well. You could just Google "free wordpress photography themes".

Note: I'm not affiliated with the developers of Photocrati or Prophotoblogs.

As you appear to be UK based, I would suggest you look at a Zenfolio account.

For a reasonable fee they will give you web space and allow people to both order through them and sort out all the payment / delivery issues for you.

I've been with them about a year now and been pretty pleased overall.
