I just went through the June challenges and gave out about 40 10s and a ton of 9s. I realized this is probably the largest number of 10s I've given and every photo deserved it. When I see some photos in the top 10 of any given challenge getting lower scores than they deserve, I realize there may be something inherent in the voting culture on this site. In fact, I can almost predict the photos ranking 9th and 10th June Free Study results will receive averages in the 6s.

Here's a challenge for this week (and I promise I have nothing entered in any challenge right now and I am not submitting in the next ones, so this is not a self-serving suggestion) - let's try to give higher scores if the image deserves it. I realize some people may vote photos on a scale - rating only one image a 10 and then comparing every other image to that. There are countless other voting strategies out there, but it all seems to add up to very low scores, even when the image is amazing. I've gradually changed my own voting practices and I hope to see my "average vote given" rise to reflect the tremendous quality of images in these challenges (especially members-only challenges).

I think we need to shake things up a bit. Here's my voting suggest - give high marks to photos you yourself would be proud to submit. Before you give something a 4 or a 3, is it really a below-average image? Trust me, the best photo will still get the ribbon, but maybe the averages among the top ten will be higher than a 6!

That's not a bad idea. I'm coming back to DPC aftera bit of a hiatus. I'd like to see my own "votes given" go up a bit higher as well. It's really shameful that quality images aren't at least getting 7s as the average. 6s are just far too low. I'll take you up on the challenge as I vote (which will be in the next few minutes).

Personally, I already give higher marks. I only wish I could accomplish half of what some of the photogrpahers on this site accomplish. I'm taking a photography course right now and hopefully my future submissions will get higher scores.

I gave a lot of 6's this challenge and probably the most 7's & up of any challenge I've scored so far.

I thought the photos were really excellent overall. It seemed that even the photos which had subjects I'm not really crazy about or were maybe a tad boring, were still much better than usual technically. There number of "snapshot" sort of entries were very minimal.

Great job everyone!

I guess i'm one of the culprit also. My average given is pretty low. The way I vote is average picture is 5 and I vote up or down accordingly. I'll start with an average of 6 instead. it's a bit better for a start :)

Think this is a good idea. I often find my self voting pretty low but probably I should compare the images here to what I´m submitting myself.
I also think that one should be forced to comment on pictures you vote belove 5 or 6 or something like that and people should be reminded to add something constructive and what it is that could be done to make the image better.

This is exactly what I started doing about three challenges ago also.It is yet to be reflected in my average-vote-given, but I am really raising the bar of my own voting pattern and hope more of us continue to join in on this. Thanks for a great post!

I'm new to this so I could be way off base...For the most part I only vote for things I like. However if they are very creative, original and so forth (whether I like it or not) I will vote for it and give it a 6 or higher. I can't figure out why I would vote and give somebody a 2.

I don't know, after I reread this, I did begin to wonder if maybe it is to help that/those photographers (including myself). Can you give constructive criticism and not vote?

I'm not sure how to say this without sounding rude, and that's not my intention. What's the point of this? As long everyone who votes rates the complete set of pictures, the rating system you use makes absolutely no difference to the percentile, nor does it affect the final ranking of each picture. You'd just be exchanging one set of arbitrary numbers for another. It would be like switching from a 1-10 rating system to an A-F rating system.

Exactly. If the croud dont like what you are doing its good to know but it´s as important to know why they dont like it so I as I said before I think everyone should explain a low voting.

I will say I agree with you. How can we expect to do better if we don't know what could be improved upon? Guess I sorta answered my own question.
