In honour of the 30th anniversary of the tragic, untimely death of one of the greatest musicians and songwriters who ever lived, may I suggest a challenge featuring the work of John Lennon.

Both his solo work and his previous work with the Beatles, so long as he was actually the songwriter and/or acknowledged co-writer of a Beatles song. So a song accredited to Lennon/McCartney would indeed fit the challenge.

So those looking to do 'Here Comes the Sun' and 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' (both popular songs used in recent song challenges) will have to wait for the George Harrison challenge :-)

Good Lord. Thirty years?! I remember the day vividly. Profoundly sad.

I'm not good with these types of challenges, but I think it's one I'd enjoy voting/commenting.

I found this list of songs credited to John:

Many many choices there.

The only image I can see is the time he was in bed with his hooker wife. Paul and george is ten time better than john.

Alas, though it's scary to think of how much time has elapsed, it really was that long ago. I remember being in grade 9 Religion class when we learned of his death :-/

re: whiterook...I never cared for Yoko Ono either, and I bet there are several out there who also share your views. But it does not take away from the brilliance of Lennon, who comprised half of one of the greatest songwriting teams of all time. And despite (or because?) of Yoko, he still wrote many wonderful songs during his solo years.

my guess is that he was way more than half of that team

I'd love to know what you're basing your comparison on..
They were completely different musicians -- George played lead guitar and wrote some amazing songs .. (perhaps the best songs credited to the Beatles)..
Paul?
Paul got left behind after the white album, with his only major contributions being Let It Be, and Oh Darling! (which, in my opinion, should have been sang by John)..

I don't think it'd be fair to compare the four with each other as being "better" as they all have their individual mindsets and skills to contribute to the band.

I think your information is flawed, you obviously know little about the Beatles. The majority of writing credits go to John and Paul, this was the main reason for their split. George and Ringo were not happy with the division of royalties and the fact Paul and John were earning more, this was one of reasons why John gave Ringo Tittenhurst Park as a part payment.

Hey, Stephen was expressing an opinion! He thinks Paul and George both were "better" than John. I don't think "flawed information" enters into it... Personally, I don't agree, I liked John best of the Beatles, but that's neither here nor there...

Clearly the best writer, singer, musician and God Like Talent of the Beatles was Ringo! As well as the best solo career! End of Discussion!

Funny to see Whiterook still pissed off at the Beatles splitting up. Yoko a hooker? rofl

Good suggestion Snaffles.

Would this be only his solo stuff or his Beatles repertoire too? How would we choose a Beatles song if all are attributed to Lennon/McCartney?

Thanks Jac! I suggested both work from his Beatles career and solo career. And you're right, any Beatles songs credited only to Lennon would be more than suitable. Just so used to automatically thinking 'Lennon/McCartney'...

Yeah, that 'It don't come easy' song...and what other ones? *scratching head* ;-)

Needless to say, I have always been a fan of John.

George Harrison career took off after John lennon's death. Listen to dark horse years George is much better singer and writer.

Then, as you're obviously a George fan, suggest a George Harrison challenge to coincide with the anniversary of his death. This is not a matter as to who was the better singer/writer/vocalist/musician.

And both John and George actively promoted peace, harmony and love in the latter years if their lives.

So, I firmly believe that if anyone resorts to schoolyard behaviour - trying to cut down one person in order to make another look better - then that is completely counter to what both men very strongly believed in.

IMHO you are lining yourself up for a can of cosmic whup-ass. You really want that?

*humming Instant Karma*

In honour of the Birthday of Jim Croce 30( January 10, 1943). The tragic death of the greatest musican and songwriters who ever lived, may I suggest a challenge featuring the work of Jim Croce.
