I noticed a few threads about this previously but I wanted to freshen it up. I saw the lego camera on sale and I was reminded how much my kids would like a little camera.

The last one we got was from my mother and it was horrible. Even changing the batteries was a bear and required a phillips head. There was no memory card and the images were barely even worthy of geing called images. The viewfinder was even worse …

So …

Any thoughts on a decent digital camera that would be used by a 6 year-old (and most likely a 2 year old)?

There are a few other kids cameras around (I've seen one under the Crayola brand), but I think you might consider spending a bit more and buying one of the newer waterproof/shockproof P&S cameras (which they might let you share). Otherwise, make sure you get a camera which has some zoom capability -- I got my son an inexpensive camera for his sixth birthday, and he was very frustrated with its limitations after having previously borrowed my camera.

I really like the Oly shockproof waterproof camera. If it were only loss proof and somewhat less than the $200 it would be ideal for kids. As is, its still a great kid's camera.

I have a shockproof/water proof cam that I let my kids use sometimes, but only under my supervision.

What I have done is get them an older, used camera that I don't care too much if they trash or lose it and I tell them they need to take care of it and demonstrate responsibility before I'll even consider getting them anything nicer. They can still take all the snaps they want and prints will look good (unless they're making HUGE posters).

I bought my son the Olympus 770 for his 4th birthday (it was his only present) - it's waterproof, shockproof, and dustproof. However, I've just bought myself the Canon D10, the submarine. It's a better camera than the Olympus. I did look at the kids' cameras - they suck. The image quality is horrendous. Basically, my boy had camera care drilled into him (he used my big rig from age 3), and he's not allowed to use it for extended periods unsupervised. As in he can take it out with friends in the neighbourhood, but can't take it to school - that's too long, and too many instances to get lost.

He's been told this is the only camera he's going to have until he can buy one himself. He takes pretty good care of it, and loves it. He's now 7 and the Olympus is going strong. That said, I'd go for the Canon now.

Hi there!

I recently (last month) bought my 2 year old son an Olympus Tough 3000.

He absolutely LOVES carrying it around and showing it off.
He's already dropped it once (although I've taught him that when he picks it up, he needs to always have the wrist strap on) and the camera didn't skip a beat.

Hasn't taken it in the bath with him as yet, which is a good thing, but wouldn't worry me at all if he did..

The camera is fantastic, takes amazing (TRULY amazing) pictures in comparison to ANY kid-designed camera out there, and the viewfinder is really good as well.

Okay, so my son has so far taken ONE picture that has a face on it (luckily it was my face), and mostly pictures of feet, the floor, the roof, his knees, and a few of his Buzz doll.. But he's very proud of it.

I could not praise it enough, and will recommend it over any other camera you're thinking of buying to a child of any age.
