Lots of people, including myself, are always clamoring for more useful and constructive comments on our photos. Maybe there is an incentive to achieve this objective...
Maybe there could be a consideration for implementing a 'comment points' addition to the site favorites pages.
The concept behind this would be that when a voter leaves a comment on a photo, the photographer has an option to (radio button or check box) to give credit to the comment if it is considered to be useful or helpful. Each photographer collects points for comments given.
Photosig does this and it seems to create more useful comments.
Any ideas on this?

My idea is that I definitely want it. It's on my list -- I've just got to finish up a few things I've already started!! But add your comments here, people... Now's a great time to get your input in for how it should work.
I like the helpful/not helpful/no opinion option... sadly, I was going to use this before I even heard of photosig, but now I don't want to use the same naming scheme as them.

Here an idea-
After a challenge, winner is announced, etc - you check out your comments and next to each comment are two icons:
icons i fashioned for this
Camera = Good critique rating. You''d push the radio button next to this icon if the person gave you an honest, well thought out, good advice, etc type of comment.
Yellow Smiley Face = Appreciated Comment. They complimented you on your photo in some way and you feel necessary to redeem their niceness in this fashion.
Under the profiles of each person (say, at the top under their email address etc area) is again, the small camera icon and the yellow face icon. Next to each of those are numbers. This means what you are rated.
<shrug>
just an idea :)

The one thing that Photosig has going for it with the idea of critiquing comments is that you "get" something for a positive score -- the ability to post additional pictures once you've accumulated enough points.
I know it sounds mercenary, but would would we get? I'm taking the devil's advocate position here, I like to think I already make insightful comments without any kind of reward. But what I'm asking is, why would people care one way or another if they're not already trying to be helpful?

Jeez, you guys have too much time on your hands! Why do we need comment points? What do the points award you? So you can add another star beside your name? I say to just keep it the way it is.....CLEAN & SIMPLE!! And no silly little icons, it looks unprofessional and childish.
All the changes recently are becoming more of an irritant that anything else. It definitely hasn't changed the way i vote or comment; besides a large majority of the comments are from people who have absolutely no artistic background. So receiving critisism from those folks is a non-event.
I personally find it far too time consuming to comment on every photo. I usually coment on photos which are original and creative. Photos of pets/flowers/babys lack creativity, so i can't be bothered to waste my time on them.

There are a lot of people on this site who put sincere effort and a lot of work into their comments. If nothing else, I look at it as a way to say 'Thank You' to those who took the time to help.

um, ouch. I was just having fun man.

The main reason I joined this site was because I felt it has a good mixture of those that have plenty of education/experience/talent along with those that are like me and wanting to have fun and learn along the way.
Are only people who have degrees in art and perhaps gallery exhibits of their own allowed to view artwork at the museum?

The magic of this system would be that you don't have to comment on everything, you don't have to appreciate those that take their time out (like you do) to comment on photos. This particular topic (comment points) isn't something required to participate on this site (granted i'm not in charge of it, but it certainly hasn't sounded like it would be).
I usually coment on photos which are original and creative. Photos of pets/flowers/babys lack creativity, so i can't be bothered to waste my time on them.
You are entitled to your opinion regarding photo topics and what you find creative. But many people may have thought (about Frozen, your photo)"hey, that was just a piece of ice you photographed" but you tried to view it in a different way, you tried something - and many people liked it (myself included). That's what some people are doing with their photos of flowers, pets, babies - they saw something they wanted to capture in a certain way, and did it. :)
just throwing out my two cents :) - Jen

I think it's a great idea, and it got me thinking: Would it be possible to send a email to the commenter while maintaining anomymity? It would remove a lot of frustration to clear up misconceptions. |

Sheyingshi88,
They've talked about that in the past, anonymous e-mails I mean, but it was eventually discarded (I think) because they didn't want people trying to influence scores while the voting was still going on. If you have a problem with my picture, and leave me a comment, and I talk to you about it and help you see it my way, and then you go back in and revote, I've influenced your vote -- anonymously or not. They've also talked about locking the votes after you comment, but then that means you can't go in later and change your vote if you desire with or without outside influence.
That's the way I've understood things anyway -- maybe I'm wrong.

I think this is a great idea but I definitely want to see those points used for something. Perhaps we can have a "Best Commentators" section where the best overall and the best of the week can be displayed. Another idea which ties in to the discussing about needing 95% votes or 25% comments would be to have the points used to actually submit a photograph. Say, submitting a photograph is 100 points, every time you vote you get one point, everytime you comment you get one point, every time someone likes your comment you get another point. Then you pay 100 points to submit you photo for the next week. We can either just let the points be accumulated like photosig and let it stand for status or we can find new things to purchace with our remaining points.

Rating comments is not a bad idea, but I don't think a "best commentators" list would accomplish anything. Yes, John is right, Photosig's method seems to elicit more constructive critique, however, I personally find the system they use to be confusing. I've only been posting there for a week, but it seems everyone can rate the comment on usefulness. I'd rather it be limited to the photographer, so we can see if it was helpful to the intended person. That said, there is already an opportunity here to comment on a photo and its comments after the challenge, and it looks like alot of people make good use of that. Would it be to faster to click a bullet next to "useful"/"not useful", etc rather than writing a paragraph. Sure. Would it make this site too much like the others? Depends on how it is done in the end. The Admins here have done a great job at keeping this site easily navigated. I'd hate to see it get bogged down and overwhelmed with "things to do while I'm hitting the refresh button to watch my score drop". On another note, I also completely agree with Jen, especially in that people are here to not just improve their photography, but to improve how they photograph in their favorite subjects or what not. Like I've said before, photographers have made their career photographing children, animals, landscapes, etc. And when it comes right down to it, look around the earth. There are certain subjects that are common and available. Look at it a different way, and enjoy yourself.

I see this site as a learning site on both sides of the fence..voters and photgraphers.
But I think the very nature of this site as it is designed right now is aimed at the middle of the pack web surfer. Not a good or bad thing.
1-10 Ratings systems are, by their nature, a convention of pop culture and not great photography learning technique. It's only natural that people who like to vote and submit here like this kind of thing.
I agree that we need to keep things simple because it's the main reason I post here. Simplicity.
If I wanted incredible depth and perception into all the nuances of a photo I think another site would be better for that... You can't have one web site be all things.
But for a weekly snapshot of how a photo affects the average web surfer..this site is dead-on as it stands right now. |

I know people have talked about a mini mid week challenge. Maybe the criteria for entering it could be based on reaching a set number of points, say "20", based on how well your comments are rerceived about the last weeks challenge. 1 point(the camera icon) for useful tips and 0.5 point for an appreciated but non technical comment. This would encourage people to be more thoughtful about their comments. Maybe even 0.5 point reduction for a nasty comment. Just a thought ;-)
