Hey everyone...
I was at a Josh Ritter gig a while ago and the photos have been lying on my computer untouched...I know NOTHING about editing photos, is anyone up for the challenge of editing a couple of my badly taken photos?
It would be nice to see how they could look...

blur the crap out of them and enter them in free study, you'll probably win a posthumous award.

:P
They weren't taken for a competition...plus I'm not a member so can't enter a free study...this is just for my own personal use.

Mike's just jealous. Is there somewhere you can post them and share them? It's easy to get the impression around here that a photograph is nothing until it gets a sophisticated Photoshop treatment. My point is that they might not even need much editing. Or, at most, just some corrective adjustments.

Thanks bvy...I will post them up on Picasa soon...all I have done is crop a few...jumping about in a crowd isn't the best place to get good photos, once I put them up I'll post the link here.
Thanks again.

Editing is an important part of photography. It would do you well to do some practicing on your own. First of all, what editing programs do you have? Start with them and research online for tutorials using those programs. If you don't have any editing software, many people here use GIMP, which I think is free. You really don't want to just hand off your editing to others as the results can be far from what you are truly looking for.
Depending on how serious you are about your photography, you might also try to network with people in your area. See if there is a photography club...there would be folks that you could learn from. Or if you prefer a classroom setting check the local colleges.
Meanwhile, if you care to email me a couple of your photos I can give it a shot and tell you the steps I did so that you can then practice them on your own.

ShutterPug,
Thanks, I recently obtained GIMP and I had planned on editing some photos on it...then I just got frustrated as there were so many options!!!
I am not a serious photographer...don't have the time for it, but you are right as I do want to learn. I am quite interested to see what can be done to my photos...which should hopefully motivate me to learn how to use my camera and an editing program also!
Thanks for the offer I will definitely take you up on it!
Thanks also for the advice. (Wow I managed to say Thanks 3 times there...)

Elements is cheap, powerful, and capable. I actually "downgraded" from full PhotoShop (CS2), and I love it. There is a somewhat frustrating learning curve 'til you get the hang of it, but I love it and highly recommend it.

As has already been said, your best bet for editing is to learn how so that ultimately, your images turn out the way YOU want them to.....

That said, you can e-mail me one or two that you particularly like, and I'll have a go at them as well.

It'll be tough as I'd wager they're jpeg files, so editing options will be limited.

They are jpeg, I'm a pure amatuer and the thought of having jpeg and RAW files to save and store is another headache.
(I shall hang my head in shame.)
Here are my mediocre images from a fun night...

For something like this, definitely shoot Raw next time. You'll have infinitely more editing options. Not that these are unusable. They could definitely use a levels or curves adjustment so they aren't so dark. Maybe some noise clean up too.

I second the use of Elements. GIMP is a good powerful tool, and the price is right -- but the interface is daunting. Elements is much more user friendly, especially for a beginner, and has a good basic toolset -- as much as or more than you may need for a long time. Good luck!

I agree with bvy, if you shoot RAW, you will have about 2 stops more of dynamic range in either direction and it will make it easier to get something better from a poor lighting situation. These pics of mine were shot as RAW under very similar lighting conditions.

The biggest thing you will get out of RAW is better control over white balance, as with a RAW, you don't set the white balance until you are working on it at the computer. Plus the extra dyamic range will give you the ability to pull in some details from bright highlights and dark shadows. Makes strange lighting much easier to deal with.

Those pics are still pretty good, however, and there is a lot that can be done to bump them up another notch.
