So, if I were entering this in this week's member challenge, what other problems does it have? :-)

Wow I love this, it is excellet! I would give it a 9. It would be a 10 if the outline of the owl was a little bit more clearly defined. AT the moment the blow out background leaks into the owl a bit but... wow. Great photo.

I like it. He kind of looks a bit out of place on the white background, but that white background COULD be sky. It almost looks like a pencil sketch. That's a good thing, cause it means it's really clear. Kind of a "too good to be true" shot. I'd give it a high score though. I wonder how some people would feel about it not being a human portrait. I think that some people don't understand that you can have animal portraits too, and even portraits of things that don't breathe.
I guess someone could complain that you cut his legs off, but I don't mind.
I think it would do really well.
Great shot, by the way!

Wow! Beautiful shot! The 'missing feet' keep this from being absolutely perfect. There is some slight blowout in there too...but it doesn't bother me a bit :)

I knew people would say something about the feet/legs. I've cropped it different ways, and decided I liked this one best. Because it has a band on its right leg, all the feathers on that leg have worn off -- so it looks kind of strangely like Long John Silver and that bothered me.

As for the background, it was shot in a zoo through one window with another behind it. It had snowed and everything outside the far window was pretty much already completely blown. Tweaking levels to bring the owl to the proper exposure just pushed the background completely over the edge.

I was more curious about the fact that it has been toned, it's not a human, all that negative space, etc etc etc -- so far one comment that it's might not be a portrait because its not human. (Though I recognize hbunch was saying others might see it so.)

PS -- This is one you really have to see at desktop size to appreciate. It looks so much better when that owl is as big as your head. :-)

I, for one, hope that the challenge results AREN'T just a bunch of head shots and human portaits. I think a photo like this is going to stand out immediately from the rest, and that's to your benefit.

Granted, it's Thursday and I'm still not sure I know what I am going to do for the challenge. Maybe that's why I'm up for something different? LOL.

I think 'portrait' sort of implies 'human'. It's sorta like how 'candid' implied human also... The high scoring shots in the candid challenge were people shots...

It's probalby ok to photograph a portrait of your pet though..

I love this shot. I would give it a 9, because the legs are missing, but you took a fine photo and should be very proud of it. It is almost perfect. I love the white background. Makes it unique and different from the rest. Keep up the good work.

Wonderful photo. I don't know how you got the bird with no background, it's great. I think that the only problem you would have is the lack of feet and, some might not feel that a photo of a bird is an actual portrait. I looked up portrait in the dictionary and it states that it is the likeness of a "person".
