has it ever happened that 95% or more of your votes are all the same?
Just curious. My score has only varied by .09 the entire challenges, lol.

sure, the more votes you get the less one vote affects your average. so you may not be noticing drastic changes in in the votes.

yup. I've had challenges (usually of the 5.5 type) that don't particularly change for the entire week. Actually my fill flash challenge has only varied by about .08

these past two challenges, my average votes received varied up and down by only that much during the second day of voting onwards. then it would sink down by a very wide margin during the last 12 hours of voting.

There is some discussion in this thread of ‘trolls’ and it made me wonder what a troll really is. Someone who gives ‘good’ photographs a low score, for malicious or perverse reasons? Someone who gives your photograph a low score, for any reason at all?

The inevitable request for low voters to explain themselves with a comment is a two-edged sword, as pointed out by Jack Nicholson vis-à-vis the truth in A Few Good Men. It has been my experience, as a low voter myself, that an explanation is frequently met with defensiveness and hostility. In any case, a low vote can mean quite different things from different critics.

Consider zeuszen (average vote cast 3.5) and me (average vote cast 4.4). Both lowballs.

zeuszen has a beautifully structured and balanced scoring rationale that he occasionally publishes when provoked by a particularly obtuse ‘trolls’ thread. It combines both aesthetic and technical values and leads with an elegant inevitability to low scores for many images that less discriminating observers than himself might embrace with a “Wow! 10!!!” The two-edged part is that someone who creates a “Wow! 10!!!” image in the first place will neither appreciate nor welcome an explanation of a low vote made under such an alien aesthetic.

My own system is far less elegant.
• If I don’t want to look at an image for longer than one second it gets a 3. In that case its technical proficiency does not even enter into my decision; if it’s not interesting at all, then it’s a 3.
• If I look for longer than one second, but less than about five seconds, it gets a 5 score.
• If I look for longer than five seconds it gets a 7 score and I will come back to look at it again later and probably comment. My personal top pick then gets upgraded to a 10.
In this Bridges challenge I’ve voted but haven’t commented yet, and so far have given six 7s, fifty-two 5s and eighty-four 3s. I’m happy to explain all the 3s with a comment: “Not interesting.” But that doesn’t help, does it?

What if your dog ate your shoe that day, or you drink too much beer and still wanted to vote. Everything you see is blurry, gets 3.

I don't understand this mentality, but you explained yourself pretty good, it's "less elegant" style... aka "troll-er"

Could one of my 3s be a 5 on another day? Possible. So's vice-versa.
Could a 3 be a 7 on another day? No.
As for blurry, that almost never gets a 3. Blurry is nearly always interesting.

I urge you to always vote after a few drinks then...

Yep, me too...

From my 6.1 after 50 votes I got a 4 and a 2 as my next two votes. The 4 I can accept, but no way it's worth a 2.

A question for you - and please be kind, as I'm NEW at this! I see my average, and I know to update it to get the most recent, but how do you know the individual voting scores, such as "a 4 and a 2 as my next two votes"? Are you just doing the calculations as each vote comes in, or is there a place to see individual votes cast?

Effectively yes, we calculate after each vote... that's the lure/addiction to the update button for you. I see you are a full member so you will see the update button on the left hand side of the screen when you have an image in voting. You will also need a decent spreadsheet for tracking the scores to take the pain out of the math.

I use the one provided by Hawkeye Lonewolf, known now as klkitchens. The link is on his profile page. Instructions are held within the spreadsheet. There are other options though.. just search the forums for "vote tracker spreadsheet" and you should come back with a few options. That's all I did.

the math is very easy you just multiply your new score times the number of votes, you will get a whole number or almost a whole number, next subtract you old score times the numer of votes. take the second number and subtract it from the first. viola. it only works if you can check after each vote. otherwise you will get a total of all the votes in between.

Had a couple of strange events happen today, mostly people amending their scores...

Votes: 85
Avg Vote: 6.2353

Votes: 85
Avg Vote: 6.1765

That works out as a drop of 5 points.. so either someone had a real change of heart, of 5 people have shuffled me down a point in the last hour or so.

Instead of pressing "update" button every minute and doing all the calculations, you could download a program that does it for you.
Here's the thread on dpChallengeMonitor program: //www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=1018705
And here's the website from where you can download the program: //sites.google.com/site/dpchallengemonitor/home
The program gives me an easy to read graph that tells me what Vote.1 through latest vote is, and also shows me the overall vote distribution, for each of my entries currently in voting. Nifty.

This is my first submission - my goal was to be above the 50% mark. From reading through this thread I think that i have a good shot at that! I am a little disappointed at the comments though - nothing bad, just not much of anything. I am just getting started in photography - never had a class or anything and was looking forward to getting some comments / critiques to help me get better. Any ideas on where to go to get this?

Thanks!

lawrysimm, Chandi and mike_311 - thanks so much for your answers. Sounds like fun, keeping track like that. However, since I can only check in now and then during the work day, I'll probably have to settle for the updated average score, rather than catching individual votes. By the way, I'm blown away by some of the wonderful photography that shows up here. I hope, hope, hope I can learn and grow with y'all in time.

awesome!! Isn't it odd when a vote of 7 brings you down?

One thing you can do is to post the picture in a thread requesting feedback after the challenge is over. Many people are happy to give feedback when requested.
