While voting and you come across a shot in portrait format that doesn't completely fit on the screen causing you to have to scroll up and down, do you vote that picture lower?

I have a shot I'm entering that has a key element at the very bottom of the frame and a secondary element at the top so I'm wondering if I should make the picture smaller.

thoughts?

I've never deliberately voted lower... but it does take away from that initial impression. I have asked myself the same question. I personally think that if the bottom of the shot is key, it might be better smaller. I've also cropped square when I had that issue.

Keep in mind the whole "scroll or no scroll" depends upon the screen the viewer is using to vote. For instance, even though I use a laptop, I can view portrait images just fine, especially if I use full screen mode.
Having said that, no, I would never vote down. I've done voting on a smaller monitor where I did scroll, but that just made me evaluate the photo longer and more carefully. So, I guess if the photo was good it might get a better vote at that point, and a lower quality photo might get a lower score.

I usually go into full screen mode for voting. It would seem ridiculous to vote lower because someone had to scroll down IMO.

Two things could help to view these images without scrolling, 1) Full Screen mode (F11) and 2) zoom(hold the control while moving the mouse wheel). Most of the new browsers support this.

Yeah, I used Marty's method if something doesn't fit on my screen. I don't see how this could possibly affect the score, unless it's also a flawed image.

I would never vote an image down for it's size (unless I couldn't see it - he he he).
But I've heard that initial impressions are important to the average voter on this site so if you are doubting it, you probably should resize.

I don't think I'd vote an image down just because I had to scroll up and down, but I can understand how some people would find it an annoyance and it immediately reflect in their vote. I'd re-size it to be on the safe side.

thanks everyone for all the input.

the part that would concern me is the initial impact of the viewer might be lessened. hmmmm, dilemma.

I'd say go with the 720 pixel size that was the previous challenge limit for exactly that reason. It is the largeest size that can be viewed on a 768 pixel high monitor if the viewer goes full screen

A big amen to that. People can basically use whatever criteria they choose when voting, but I would seriously hope this would not be a consideration for a lower score.

Ridiculous. You have a monitor that is either old and small or your resolution is set to something like 800x600 so the photographer should get penalized for that? Or resize their image smaller so everyone else votes it down? Ridicoulous.

ETA: I am using the term "you" in the collective here by the way.

I'm one of those 'you'. I have a laptop, not a pc, and it is older than many, and I can't see all of a 800 px portrait orientated photo on the screen. And yes, I suspect that I do probably vote a photo I can't see all of lower. Not deliberately, but because it has immediately lost much of its impact. It's not because its an annoyance, but because I simply can't appreciate the image the photographer was hoping to convey - in a simple or central composition that might not matter, but in compositions where an element in the top and/or bottom ties the photo together, I can't see that whole.

That said, now I know the zoom trick, life will be easier - and if you like, fairer.
