That is nice lighting, Mehmet. What did you use to make the box?
06/30/2004 04:27:43 AM · #3
i used metal cloth hangers (4 hangers for each box) and aluminum foil and white cloth and halogen lights and black electric tape.. i cut and bent the hangers tot he shape of a soft box and wrapped it with aluminum foil and put a white cloth in front of it and voila.. cheap and awesome

Thanks! I would be worried about the halogen bulbs setting the cloth on fire. Do you feel like there is any danger of that, or does that setup seem safe to you?

I've got one like this //lumiquest.com/lq925.htm for my 550EX. Does a lot, specially when I'm using my transmitter, but a larger one would be better.

For you DIY'rs...Tinker Tubes
I am at this time making the a combo between the Adjustable Light box and the self standing panel to soften light from my new halogen works lights (with case-available at Home Depot). Still thinking about the soft box part (can take it off and on). Also going to build 2 Light stands (modified a bit) to hold reflectors (the round car window ones from WalMart) and in the future actual photo reflectors ( I do have one), that use those "incubation lights" with the spring clamps. Should be fun. I like building things anyway, and it gets me more toward setting up a "studio" in my spare bedroom. WeeeeeHaaaa!

This is just way too cool. Man I wish I had the time to build something. I'm keeping this just in case I find myself alone with nothing to do. Thanks for the link.

Very neat...

I did something similar, although I wanted to avoid the heat from the halogens.

I went a bit over the top and splashed out for some $3 buckets (18" round ones) and put four high efficiency flouros in each one, lined with tinfoil. Then I clothes peg bits of opaque drafting film to the front. Works well enough for me, although they could do with more surface area. Mk2.0 versions will be bigger...

A picture is worth a thousand words.. picture

I may also add another couple of bulbs, these are equiv. of 400W incandescent, and need to be a bit brighter to be really useful for portraits, they're fine for still life but don't give enough light for anything that might move on you.

They didn't come with neat stands like yours, but I just hang em from the rafters in the garage by bits of string, or sit them on fold-out wire laundry stands. (Assuming there is no clothes on the stands at the time!)

The only pic I've got on here I used them for is:

They can run indefinately without getting too hot, although the first time I left them running for an hour or so the glue I used to stick on the tinfoil made a stink in the lounge. (3M spray 77)

I'm a great fan of not spending money on anything I can cobble together myself :-).

EDIT: Typo'd the URL for the image... Doh.

I found the Tinker Tubes PDF about a year ago; it's great! Some guy on eBay is trying to sell a ripoff of it for about $7!
