whoever came up with an aspect ratio of 8x10 should be shot!

How many times have you taken the shot, only to find out you didn't leave extra room and you can't crop to an 8x10!? If it's a simple background, you can clone and add more. But I have some shots that I can't adjust.

Darn, darn, darn!

Ya got a 7D right.... Change the viewfinder display to the grid option..... The edges have lines that might as well be 5:4 ratio..... You can show a 4:5 ratio in th live-view window as well if you use live view.

You can sometimes get away with increasing the canvas size and clone-filling some areas (or use content-aware fill in CS5).

...and shouldn't you be wanting to shoot the camera manufacturers for not making a 4:5 (8x10) sensor on all cameras since 8x10 prints predate digital cameras?

What's aspect ratio? Is that why I can't sell anything? Or is that the fifth reason why I can't sell anything?

I'm so with you, for that matter 16x20 as well. (which is the same as 8x10 I know but as I've done a few 16x20's the last few months I've been reminded of this issue)

No, the reason you can't sell anything is that world is full of selfish people who would rather fritter their money away on rent and feeding their families. Don't they understand that they have the opportunity of a lifetime to support us, the amateur photographers, in our quest for immortality.

Well said, Frank. And don't get me started on those sick folks who spend a fortune on medicine while we face things like this cropping crisis every day. Selfish bastards.

I'm going metric.....
10/03/2010 07:05:03 PM · #11
I like 12-1/4 inches X 21mm ratio myself. I'm not completely comfortable with metric yet.

Re the original post, "You bring 'em, we'll shoot 'em. "

Don't blame anybody but the IDIOTS who created 35mm film cameras. Before that, everything was hunky-dory, films were 4x5 inches or 8x10 inches, and real photographers had black cloths over their heads. Sigh... Those were the days...

(We won't mention 5x7 and 11x14, okay? Those anomalies don't count. Really they don't...)

8x12 would be better ;)

Metric is easy - you just take a rectangle with an area of one square metre and a ratio between the short and long sides equal to the square root of two. Thats A0. Halve the long side and you have A1, still with a ratio of root 2, Neat, huh?

You don't like DeutschIndustriNormal? Vee haff vays, you know...

I've done that numerous times with headshots...sheesh....you get in the good habit of composing completely in camera, only to find out you screwed yourself, because they need an 8x10! TOBAL!

I think it's time to change the standard to 8X12
Heck the tvs went to the 16X9 why not photos?

Personally, I think the whole idea of dumbing down a circular image to a rectangle is preposterous in this digital age. All the problems would be over if cameras captured a circle.

Really? Where do you buy your circular mattes? ;o)

4/3 camera users love 8x10 crops, 35MM users love 8x12, 6x9, 4x6. I tend to screw up the 8x10 crop in shooting too tight as well. SH*& happens.

I just put a border (i.e. digital mat) around the image -- then I can crop (or not) as suits the photo itself, not some arbitrary paper size.

The Leicas provide that ratio in camera. It's my default now.

Wendy, if it's close you can sometimes squish the one dimension by 5-10% and while it looks weird at very first it looks normal after a while. I've done that on a few shots that just can't crop right.
10/31/2010 12:08:24 AM · #24
A 1:1 would be the most efficient use of the image circle...

That's a thought -- wouldn't have come up with that one. Thanks doc.
