So I recently got my camera bag stolen and my 430exII went along with it. I took out my old 580ex and put that on camera but if I change the zoom length to anything other than 28mm I get a bunch of clicking from the flash head and then the zoom length number flashes on the back of the unit. Is my 580ex toast? Perhaps the old batteries in it are contributing to the problem? Has anyone seen this (or I guess more accurately, heard this) before?

I have not had that problem with that particular flash. Although I do own one. I did drop a 430 ex flash once. It destroyed the zooming head function. Almost sounds what may have happened to you. I remember when I tried to zoom it, it would attempt it but would click and such. Look at the front of it, when you change the zoom length Do the panels move at all? If not you have some issues. Do try fresh batteries though. Oh and make sure the wide angle panel is in. If it's out slightly, it can cause confusion. Also try new batteries. You never know....
Good luck and karma will catch up with that thief. So just keep on shooting...
