Good grief! I've only voted on 5 or 6 entries so far, and already am getting a headache. My original interpretation of theme was that the photographer just got the exposure wrong (too dark.) Then, two of the entries were underexposed and beautiful - using that type of exposure to add drama. My guess is that the latter is the real definition of the theme.

The big question.... Do we rate a lousy entry high for being too dark, period? Highly rate only those who used underexposure for a dramatic effect? Rate others basement-low because they just suck, period!!!??? What about the ones that are two dark, with a really light area (water, moon, etc)?

After reading this thread, I'm wondering how much of the "dark" is post-production. Arrgggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!

Since you can adjust exposure in RAW conversion I don't think it matteres where the underexposure was done. I think what matters is if you feel it works for the image.

The race is on LOL! This was a difficult challenge to try to guess what the voters would call "good stuff".

sorry you two - I'm.... winning?

I think that the under exposure should compliment whatever is in the photograph. So if there is a bright spot, does it really work with the underexposure. Does it add or subtract from the shot.

That is my thinking, so with that in mind i am now off to go and have a look and see why mine is turning out a crap score LOL

OKAAYyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy, I have had a look through and I think I have a headache lol, I can see the problems here:

1. bright background with foreground (say face of person or flower) is not exposed properly (black).
2. some stuff that just brought down in PS
3. bright coloured stuff that was a minus E and long exposure
4. bright spots with dark everything else
5. camera shake from minus E's

It is really really interesting though to look through them. Cos you can see how people interpret underexposed. It is actually quite fascinating and diverse.

This diversity is also strongly expressed in the way the voting is done. There are moments when getting 7, 8 or 9 shortly followed by 3, 4 or 5.

As for JulietNN's list of what she's seeing - mine may perhaps be part of #1, but it is NOT a silhouette. Part of it does have a nearly normal exposure (I don't think I would really call it bright), but the dark part still has enough detail that the one commenter could tell what it was (and yet he suggested making it a silhouette!).

I thought I was creating a mood, obviously I was wrong. (It doesn't help that my shot for Judi would have been a personal worst if it wasn't for this one.)

Can we do a postmortem on this challenge? A thread for anyone w/ a final score under 5 (or 4.5) posts their pic w/ what they were going for to hear where some of the regulars think we went wrong?

I must admit this was a hard challenge to vote in.

Im not quite sure how to vote on this.... gonna have to research and build my own definition of underexposed. I see several at first glance that I really like.... :) but I dont know if they are underexposed LOL.... might skip voting in this challenge (would be my first challenge to skip voting in) --- This is why I didnt enter!!

I'm back up from 4.08 to 4.16 now.
I second the idea of having a discussion thread when this challenge ends, about what the entrants thought compared with what the voters think.
I feel that the challenge results will probably speak for the second part of the question.

I kind of disagree with that, I think. I like to vote based on the overall feel of an image but if it's obvious that a photo was not shot underexposed in camera, then does it really meet the challenge description? I do see your point about being able to manipulate in raw but isn't that seeing "after" the fact? Or maybe I'm just tooting my own horn because I tried to shoot for the challenge and, even though I'm not scoring well, I can say I came up with something that was done with the purpose in mind.

Details: Create a photograph that is purposefully underexposed for its effectiveness.
It sort of says that it should be underexposed as shot. So I went with that too.

I understand and in theory, you are right. I shot mine at a stop or two under, but I don't think I can tell for sure by looking at an image if it was underexposed in camera or during RAW adjustment. The only thing I can go on is if it appears to suit and if it works for the image.

Some wild swings. Low voted this morning and now taking some nice jumps upward. I'm sure the roller coaster will head back down again.

Yeah, thanks for mentioning this, because I was beginning to feel a bit dim here. If someone can explain how you can spot a photo that was shot a stop or two under vs. a RAW file that was converted after being adjusted a stop or two under, I'd like to know how.

I'm not overanalyzing "underexposed" like most here. It's a photo, it's underexposed. Period. Does it work or not?
09/15/2010 01:22:04 PM · #45

Even when shooting JPG, you can do quite a bit with an underexposed original. This would qualify for the challenge, but would tank because it has a lot of noise and looks like it was exposed near correctly.
I shot it dark because there was not enough light to get shutter speed for a steady shot.

It works both ways to a certain degree. You could bring down a normally exposed image in processing and not be able to see that it was exposed normally.

I feel that voting should be based on what's presented more than how it was done, as long as it is within the rules. As someone else mentioned, this may have been better as a minimal edit challenge for the reasons we have been talking about here. That way you would have to "get the shot" using your experience and camera instead of processing to fit the challenge after the capture.

Mines going the other way. Started at 5.8 when I woke up and now down to 4.9!

Stats: You have rated 110 of 110 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 6.9909.

ok so here is my massive comment to everyone (I will commit to comment on every image) I voted high for 2 reasons, one I like the feel the darkness gave to most of these images so if I liked it and it appealed to me (under exposed or not) it got a decent score) and there was a very good mixture of variety and DIFFERENT SUBJECTS!!! so I got excited and actually enjoyed voting!! So I hope everyone likes the bump!! LOL Now to go comment on everyones photo!!!

my score seems to be swinging up and down a lot with each vote. I'm not currently tracking the votes on the monitor trackers but I'm guessing the voters either like it or its a DNMC low vote.
Should be interesting to see the final vote spread when its over.
