Not really. In PJ, this rule from AE is the one Journalism professors harp on over and over again. "You may not use ANY editing tool to move, remove or duplicate any element of your photograph that would change a typical viewer’s description of the photograph (aside from color or crop), even if the tool is otherwise legal, and regardless of whether you intended the change when the photograph was taken.
THAT is consistent with real world PJ work. Global editing, even spot removal, is very consistent with how real photo editors get the final image out.
I've been on both sides of the photo desk, even when I had to do most of the work in an actual darkroom.
I'm sorry and MattO is a good photographer, but I can not agree with him on this. |
Spot removal will result in your removal from many if not all news publications. The paper I worked for even removed a photographer for fixing redeye on a sports photo. Albeit he did a horrible job. It's unethical to remove ANYTHING from a photo in Journalism. Anyone who tells you it's OK obviously isn't very ethical or educated in journalism.

I have a BA in Journalism, don't need to read an online ethics article. I've read it all. I know the OJ darkening story. The moving of the pyramids, etc... not new news to me. Have an AP style guide sitting on the shelf behind me.
Not planning on going back to PJ work anyway, other than a few photos to accompany feature stories I produce. I much prefer models over Politicians and high school football.
In hard news, dust spot removal is quite common... red eye, a tad excessive to be anal about that... but I guess you have to play by your employers rules. At my busiest, I never processed my own work anyway, just walked in, walked out with a new assignment.
Anyway, don't worry about me... not gonna argue with ya... that's your life now, not mine. Hell, I'm not even affecting the scores of this challenge. Peace.

Just to add to the thread, here's a DPC discussion about a photog from my area who used to work for the Toledo Blade. He has since moved on with doing some very good wedding photography and other side projects.

i didn't vote, but i did manage to comment on all the entries. hope nobody takes the comments personally - i was just reacting to the images as if i were the photo director, looking for tomorrow's front page photo.

i actually had an exact 5 voting average for this challenge, which is way below my norm. i haven't been reading any threads but it seems to me like most entries missed the mark on the challenge description....or at least what i had hoped to see i guess

Too true. Nobody files photos for any paper, website or magazine that haven't been through basic levels, curves, hue/sat, etc. unless they don't have the tools to do so. So really, with basic editing rules intact, this is more of a "Local Weekly Newspaper Photojournalism" challenge. |
