In the essence of the post title (copies), and since this post is going nowhere, I'll COPY my original post below, and change it up at the end:

Excellent Idea!

This way, we don't have to see any more photos of:

Water drops
Bugs
Flowers
Mountains
Wine glasses
Portraits
Hummingbirds
Cobwebs
Roads
Foliage
Colored pencils
Colored water in tubes
Rainbows
Balls
Churches (HDR)
Boats
Cars
Balloons popping
Trees
Woodies
Forks

After all that is done, we can vote on the most creative use of toe jam.

<Sarcasm switch turned off>

Maybe its because the TOS and MSA don't specifically state "have fun", but DPC is supposed to be a place to have fun, show off your skills, learn new skills, and participate in friendly competition.

So what if someone take a photo and someone else tries to replicate it? Good. If they succeed on recreating it and its better, then its a fantastic accomplishment. Now, those two people can have a nice friendly rivalry. (This is still supposed to be fun right?)

There have been many photos used as inspiration in one way or another. Most of the time, those photographers have given credit to where their inspiration has come from. No matter how much one tries, there will always be some difference, even subtle. So much as the tilt of the head, or color balance can dramatically change the photo, make it better or worse than the other.

If you are worried about being copied, or annoyed by different approaches of the same photo, or if you generally take things too seriously, then perhaps DPC is not the place for you.

The OP is just another example of an unoriginal attempt to force one's idea of what is right on everyone else.

If one is talking about flat out 'Rippers' (and by that I mean EXACT copy with no variation) then the use of the button "report for rules violation" with a text box to post link to original could be sufficient solution. Calling out in forums is akin to a witch hunt and will do nothing but foster negativity...plus, as many have pointed out, where exactly does one draw the line with 'copying' or emulating.

Food for thought:
BTW, my photo Though Lovers be lost, Love shall not; And Death shall have no dominion was used in the example of using the standard "Heart shadow with rings shot"

I knew that I had to wait specifically for a Deja Vu challenge because the specific symbolic differences and message of love/death/Romeo & Juliet would be totally lost by those who would frown on a "shot same as" and give it a nanosecond glance.

No coding change, no extra work for SC. Allow DPC to police itself. All people have to do is post the posts that are being ripped off. Come to think of it, maybe we're allowed to do that anyway. Food for thought.

If it's not original and not creative, what earned a six to begin with?

And just one point for totally original and creative?

Hmmmmmmmm.... and I seem to recall just a while ago that people were bitchingerr.... having difficulty dealing with low scores... Interesting

Might be best if you called it: "Photos that inspire the individual". The "us" is a collective and however unfortunate you might consider it, the voting public is rewarding images that they as a collective like.

Brilliant... most assuredly open to discussion. There are many images I see that that would most certainly fall within the "avant-garde" realm, but it is truly debatable whether or not they can truly be considered brilliant.

Something to ponder

Ok, I'm still a little confused on how this will work. A few questions:

1. Is it OK to plagiarize ourselves? And if so, how would know during voting?

I'll start with myself here

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/804/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_633779.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/804/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_633779.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

2. Is it OK if the image you are copying is OK with original photographer?

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/887/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_696919.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/887/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_696919.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' (Jason drove me there and was standing next to me when I took the picture)

3. Do you have the time to devote to this?

Being the Morality Police is a full time job. I would expect that if you call any one image out you need to call out each and every image that you consider a duplicate. I am sure you can do this since you've obviously seen every photographic image ever created and have them committed to memory.

Instead of this little brain child, how about this idea for all you self appointed fine art photography experts? (And you know who you are.)

When you're browsing through the images in a given challenge and waiting for the scrotal twitch or internal lubrication to happen before you vote an entry over a 3, consider that perhaps the photographer hasn't seen every image ever taken. Maybe inspiration hit them like it hit the so called original photographer. Maybe you don't know every damn thing about every damn thing (being holier-than-thou can be exhausting).

Unclinch and lighten up a little. There's a lot to enjoy around here without a small group of "experts" pissing on everything.

What about photos that appear to be copies but aren't?

In the Double Take III Challenge I researched online and on DPC to come up with what I thought would be a really original shot. This one ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/1000-1999/1222/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_889429.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/1000-1999/1222/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_889429.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Then when voting I saw these 3 ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/1000-1999/1222/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_889523.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/1000-1999/1222/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_889523.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/1000-1999/1222/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_889380.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/1000-1999/1222/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_889380.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/1000-1999/1222/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_889628.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/1000-1999/1222/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_889628.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

I can understand a complete carbon copy of a shot shouldn't really be done for most challenges but there will always be some very similar shots that look like they may be copies. I think voters should vote how they feel. I think it is fine to try and mimic another shot but if it is intentional then it would be appropiate for the user to include a link in their notes to the shot that inspired them.
08/28/2010 03:32:06 PM · #89
What if people mistake a copy for a shot that was only coincidentally the same?

"Rocks"? There's practically NO rocks of any size on the cape. If you want rocks, go to Yosemite or Point Lobos, dude... Good luck with the photography, though, I believe it is impossible NOT to plagiarize when shooting those locations. Damn Ansel and Edward, anyway!

To be fair, though, none of this is Don's point and I think most of us realize that. It's just that it's hard to imagine any form of sanctioning that doesn't have unintended consequences.

If you've seen an image before, don't call out the photographer, just vote it lower by an amount you feel is approipriate. Images that strike you as original vote higher. Thats the way this place works.

I always find this kind of thing patently offensive. If someone doesn't want to be here, they won't need anyone's help leaving. Trying to change things in a way that will make this site better is a virtue, even if most diagree with the ideas put forward. An apology is in order. You don't have the right to suggest that anyone leave, for any reason.
