1-We're still trying to find out what still life is
2-We talked about it too much, everyone got bored and went other places
3-DPC started become a North American entity that everyone is going to bed now

One of those reasons, or combination of them could be the reason voting is pretty slow to none :-\

You are doing ok overall.. You should not give up... I believe people are frustrated because still life is not something easy to understand.

Most of what I voted on so far seemed to be shoehorns, or were just not interesting and flat lighting.

Actually they put effort and creativity into that photo. I took at least 2- hours doing my photograph and thats not post processing. Make it look like you care.

You spent 5 hours to create stuff or just go buy something and take a photo that looks like you took 5 hours to do it, no one will tell the difference. Main problem with all that is I think people are trying to sense if any of the creativity actually created by the photographer, or not. Still life after all is making the photo not taking the photo in most (that's what the big websites says).

I say this, if it pleases your eyes, it's a good photo no matter what and who. Just go with what you see rather than trying to understand the damn photo inside out.

I agree it takes some time and work to make it look like you cared, but not always with results. I spent 7 hours on my entry today, and the majority by far out of that time was composition adjustments and different lighting takes. I'm very pleased with my results, but I am not a lighting expert and have made it my priority to learn and improve upon. I don't suck at it, but obviously still not hitting the mark close enough. The voters have rewarded me with:

Honestly, I probably could have scored that by spending a fraction of the time experimenting and trying to get it right. Someday I'll figure out what I'm doing wrong. I study and research a lot on my own and have taught myself 98 percent of what I know. That's a success in my eyes and I will keep plugging away, but I wish I could find others willing to critique and give me helpful tips. I think after this challenge I will be sending a few emails out to a select group of people and basically begging them to tell me what I'm getting wrong and what I have to do to fix it. :(

First, the experimentation is a huge part of learning. My Free Study entry is the result of a few years of trying stuff out, looking at similar images and imagining what the photographer did, etc.

Second, DPC scores are NOT the arbiter of what is good photography. YOU are. Like what you shoot? Then you're doing nothing "wrong." One of my favorite shots I've ever taken got whacked hard in a FS on score, but also got several comments from people who appreciated it.

Now, if you want to shoot stuff that huge numbers of other people like, then keep at it, look at what scored well on DPC, ask questions about how those photos happened, etc.

I'm honest with myself about my entries, esp. when I try something outside the norm. I'm not usually going for score at that point, just hoping to hit the mark with some small number of folks who I hope will comment. Some of my high-scorers are photos I look at over and over, and some of them are photos I barely remember. Exactly the same thing goes for my low-scorers.

In short - hang in there, keep experimenting and otherwise learning, and remember to have fun! :)

I took an idea in my head to make a photo that was inspired. The time spent to get the light just as I wanted to and all that was well worth it. Its not about what the technical details that only make a good photo but you are ignorant if you think there isnt a reason why those things are important. I break a sweat with all the research that I do trying to become a greater photographer, research research research. The great thing is with this, I can look and see what kind of lighting was used, the direction and all that stuff that went into play. Why do all that? Because I have a ton of photos from various sources of inspiration. All this helps make those photos happen. Its worth it. Anyway, my tired rant is over. Going to bed

Thanks Levy, I appreciate the feedback. I do shoot for myself above all else, and I do have a blast while experimenting and learning to better my skills. The only person I want to challenge on this site or anywhere else is myself. I know if I continue to have fun while pushing myself harder to learn and improve in photography that the scores and hopefully ribbons will follow. I do want tons of people to like my photos and vote them high (as we all do otherwise we wouldn't be here), but truthfully I will never let that happen at the cost of submitting something that wasn't me, and truly what I wanted to shoot. Right now it's not about ribbons or top 10's for me etc. It's about improving and moving forward in a consistent way and the way I gauge that personally is against my previous scores and submissions. I truly feel that I have improved substantially in the last year, and like most feel quite frustrated to have my wheels spin and even worse go backwards in what seems adequate here at times. If I really feel I've improved so much it's hard to understand what I'm doing wrong when that doesn't translate to a larger group. I don't know....I think we all get that way on here from time to time, and know even for the perpetual ribbon winners on DPC it can be a top 3, top 5 or top 10 finish one challenge and down to the high 4's low 5's the next. Well, I'll figure it out at some point, and until then it's just one challenge at a time.

Well I am in with the taking a beating and battered crowd - you know it is *so* nice to work so hard on composition, lighting, checking to see that it looks fine on different monitors, etc. etc. to be rewarded with a below 5 score.

Really???? Yes, I am with the frustrated crowd. Yes, still life is outside my comfort zone. What greatly annoys me is that hard work and attention to lighting and composition and all other efforts that are put into the work and it gets a dumping on...I would have thought maybe a 5.5 but below 5? I guess I can take some comfort that other photographers are experiencing the same phenomenon.

I am just tired of putting so much effort into a photo when I could have just taken a shot of a hairball and gotten about the same score.

Scores going off - about the only thing I am interested in now is waiting for a critique or two.
