I downloaded Picasa 3 as a way to easily tag my photos, however, I just found this discussion on Google Support:

//www.google.com/support/forum/p/Picasa/thread?tid=0d1f649e5114b394&hl=en

If I followed the discussion accurately, they are admitting that Picasa 3 modifies exif data. I'm disappointed, but glad I read that before proceeding.

Another odd thing: when I first open Picasa, a screen appears with the heading "Picasa is ready to search for pictures on your computer" and a menu underneath with only two choices of where to search. However, there is no apparent way to customize the initial search, and no way to back out or close the program! I have to use my Task Manager to stop the process.

Thanks, I searched the forums but not thoroughly enough! I asked about Picasa last week in another thread (a recent one about reasons people are DQ'd), but last time I checked there wasn't a response.

didn't see it...but I've posted this off and on several times over the past months, when I was asked to provide my original I got it from my file sent it and and they (SC) said that the EXIF wasn't original...it showed as being modified...and I hadn't done a thing to it...it is just something that Picasa does on it's own when you are downloading from your camera/SD card...

so now I only do direct downloads and do 2 extra backups (external hard drives) one is where I keep all my "virgin" files and the other has a set of virgin files and files that I'm done with and want to store...then I work off my C drive for anything that is being edited...(I know it's overkill, but I don't care) getting Dq'd for that "sucks" for sure..don't ever want to repeat that experience...one other thing that I do is to ONLY shoot in RAW

Yikes!!!

Glad I read this before entering a challenge. Maybe I should switch to importing through the Canon software.

I only shoot in raw and never had a problem submitting an original even though I download from my card with Picasa.

Never thought about this but it sounds like I was lucky I still had the file on my card when I submitted the original for my first top 5 image. I don't think Picasa would touch the EXIF on the card - just the copy that's on the computer. (Which I didn't know til I read this thread). Fortunately I do all my work at home in Lightroom. (I did the one picture in Picasa because I was at work and I was busy the night that the submission was due)
