I am working on an idea for a proposal to a sunglasses company, doing shots of models wearing their shades... but I have no idea what to charge, for the shoot, for the processing, for the model???

Would love to hear suggestions or examples!

Wow--cool idea. With lots of variables and parameters to consider :-)

So, Getty Images is a good source to see what to charge for actual image usage rights: depending on how the company might want to use the images. I suppose you would propose several usage types with prices. And you might factor in the size and brand of the company in question: barely known, small startup company might need a different price structure than Gucci, for example :-)

Is your proposal to create all the shots, do the art direction, etc. and deliver shots to them, or are you proposing, based on a portfolio submission, to do photo work at their direction? If you are going to go off on your own and create 10 or 20 or 30 images and "shop" them to the company, then you'll need to figure out your costs in advance, make sure the image usage rates fully cover your costs and then some.

Models: rates vary from $50 to $100 per hour for beginning models, to who knows what for Agency models. If you are setting this up yourself, finding/casting models, be sure to get model releases, including parents signatures if under 18, etc. If you are proposing to work for the company/marketing/advertising agency as the photographer, then they may be doing the casting, art direction, etc., or they may still expect you to do it.

Day rates for pro shoots are anywhere from 800-1000 dollars, probably, paid assistants figure anywhere from 300-500 per day. Makeup artists have varying rates, so you will have to check with them. Same for Hair and Fashion Stylists. Equipment rental, studio rental if needed also need to be factored in. It is kinda hard to get very specific without more specifics on your proposal idea--but you might not want to be posting your idea on the intertubes, anyway :-)

Contracts are essential: how many shots, deliverable definitions, times, dates, payment terms, all that. Business and Legal Forms for Photographers is worth checking out...
