I thought the standard was good enough. Some shots were plain creepy! But a lot of them were good, and the longer you stared at 'em the more you saw that brought out the sense of... the mythological atmosphere.

I think thats whats happening with mine... Im getting 2 different scores... one good one bad LOL I think the good is seeing it for the detail of what it is and the bad is assuming its something its not LOL. Im glad I assumed this was going to get slaughtered and assumed I was going to end up with a sub 5 score... so Im pleasantly surprised.

Hey, Niall & Carrie ...I've had mine be accused of being "creepy" LOL (and it is) ;)...but, weren't mythological creatures "creepy" to begin with? ;O)

I like creepy!!!

hmm, done. as i said before, i was really unimpressed with all the statues and such things entered here, but i couldnt make myself give them ones... so lots of 2s and 3s

In all reality...as simply a thought on a side note here, the statue entries are not at all out of line in ANY way! :) I had to do some thinking about this last night but, I think that's where voters are getting messed up while voting. BECAUSE it's "Expert Editing" a lot of voters *think* that unless it's a combined set of photos, it's not "worthy" when it these shots are meeting everything that is set out. They are not DNMC's at all. :) A lot of people use basic editing in an advanced challenge..so what?

I needed an adjustment in my thinking last night and I think that is what needs to happen while voting in this challenge on everyone's parts. If it's a good shot...it's a good shot! It doesn't matter HOW it was edited or done or taken. As long as it's a good shot of a mythical creature of some kind/form, whether collaged together or shot at one whole shot of a statue, it makes no difference. It's still a mythical creature. :)

And, NO...I didn't shoot a statue but, I'm thinking for what my score is right now...I SHOULD have! LOL ;0)

What is DNMC ???

I'm no PS expert, but I wanted to challange me-self in this.. figured I'd be slaughtered... Pleasntly surprised when I had 6.2 last night but sigh, it didn't hold... I think the last I looked 5.6 (not complaing about that) any how after reading this thread I sure would like to know what a DNMC is... Thanks!!

does not meet challenge...

In this case, your picture does not really portray a mythical creature.
07/21/2010 10:22:48 PM · #106
LOL well I tried a million words to that but never got does not meet challange.. Best I had was Don't Need My Comments... Thanks!

Well, I just got me a validation request, so maybe my score will go up once people realize it's legit.

I honestly dont give a rats ass how they edited it or whether it has any editing at all, a statue is someone elses work(usually, i guess someone can be a photographer and another type of artist, im guessing most are actually) and therefore discredits the photographer IMO. Thats just me though, and i guess i could be a total hypocrit at times but it just seems a little silly for this type of challenge.

NOT to call you out, Katherine, but I think that if the photog shot a mythical creature... one that doesn't actually exist, then they've done what the challenge description said to do... whether it's a statue of a mythical or whether they created it (even if it's a myth we haven't heard of.. The challenge doesn't say "a famous myth").

Just sayin'...

(And no, I didn't enter a photo of a statue. I just think that this is a much broader topic than some are thinking of.)

its still a statue! something they didnt create and are just copying. it seems silly in all challenges, in all types of editing.

I think you're off the plinth there. When photographing subjects like statues, other things come in to play besides the sculptor's work; things like lighting, point of view and composition being the key ones. Your reasoning would equally apply to photos of buildings, chess pieces and horses (unless you're an architect/builder, craftsman or stud horse). ;-Þ

I can agree and disagree with this.

Where I disagree: In whatever editing type challenge - if there is a statue it depends on how well the photographer 1) composed it 2) are there other elements included in the shot that complement the main subject 3) angle of composition; does it add to drama or is it a straight on static shot 4) Lighting - lighting can effect/invoke mood. Something with low lighting done right can appear spooky, creepy, errie while something with a high key effect can appear ethereal, otherworldly. etc.

Where I am going to agree with you is that a good percentage of photographers do not take the above into account and just take a straight on static shot.

No statues here and still doing below my standard of reaching a 5.8 or higher much to my ire. I have received 4 wonderful comments that eliminated doubts that my composition may be suffering from noise that I failed to see, picture being too dark/too light, or something with the PP that is visible on another monitor (I even went as far to look at my entry on another monitor). So why it is doing how it is doing ....well I have my thoughts given what I have seen in other threads and 'narrow road' thinking.

Anyway off to do some commenting.

I was so tempted to do this one, but there are now a few versions of the chupacabra, so I wasnt sure how dpc would have handled it. So I did the closest next best thing ;)

I found this challenge incredible difficult to rate. I admire photoshop skills because I don´t have them, but on the other hand this is a photo-contest and I have mixed feelings about pictures where you can´t even see anymore that it´s a picture. My three favorites, just based on first impressions and two walk-throughs happen to be ones that are clearly pictures, although I know they have been edited because otherwise it wouldn´t have been possible. (One of them is very very heavily edited but still convinces as a picture, the other one I admire because it´s so subtle in its editing and the third one I even doubt whether it was edited). I did rate the statues lower, not because they didn´t meet the contest in my point of view, but because it lacked creativity compared to others. Although I did rate one of the statues quite high because I like the shot. Quite a lot of them make me feel uncomfortable and I don´t like looking too long at them. I suppose that´s often the effect that was meant, but I find it hard to rate a picture high when it makes me feel queasy. Will walk through them once more in a slow pace to comment and adjust scores.

Likewise. Not really upset, but sort of upset in a not-really kind of way.
