I guess I misunderstood the objective, and made my photo look like a newspaper photo (ie. black and white and grainy).

Now all I get is comments saying there's too much noise, or its too grainy!

Oh well. Live and Learn and Take more photos!

I know your feeling, i made my photo in b&w, and i have receive some comments like "color could make it look better".
But remember, there is a huge spectrum of taste in the world, like i said in my signature...

I didn't even submit one since I didn't come across any "newspaper like" events to photograph. Now I take a look and I see the same old snapshots labeled as newspaper photos. Sheesh! Shoulda entered one of the snapshots I took at the beach this last weekend. LOL. Ann

I'm steamed. My photo's fallen from a 6.07 at the beggining of voting to a 5.0!!! Yes, I know it's usually too early to tell at the beginning, but it's not usually THAT far off!! Everytime I update it falls in score. *harumphs* How the heck was I off that far?? This is one of my better photos by far. Now, someone tell me what I did to deserve a 5!

EDIT: *nods* I almost put mine in black and white, but I opted for color because it could be an article that would make the front page of a small town paper or something.

Don't feel too bad. Mine is plummeting as well.
Something in the back of my head told me when I submitted the photo that a particular element is missing. I knew it. Lo and Behold..comments keep mentioning the missing element! I'm such a dummy!

Gonna concentrate less on how this entry is doing all week and more on setting up my next entry.

Kolya, if it makes you feel any better, I missed the challenge objective completely. I thought it was just supposed to be a picture with newspapers in it, or something along that line, so I spent about $20 on newspapers and tape and four hours setting up the shot, only to realize about five seconds before submitting it that most of the entries would have nothing to do with newspapers at all. I thought it would be okay (I was rolling in the high 6's for a long time!), but then it prumptly plummeted to 5.0, and now everyone's telling me it doesn't fit in the challenge. Sad. :(

Better luck next time, I guess :(

This was the second challenge I entered. I uploaded my pic then went to sleep. I woke up in the morning to find my average score was 3.2something. I was in shock! I looked at everyone elses pic and thought I was gonna kick some but this challenge. lol My scores has now worked its way up to a 5.1 so I feel a little better. I also have a pic in the desaturation and it is doing great I think. (6.3626) Hopefully a top 10 (crossing my fingers)

The way things are going with my photo I'll be happy if I don't finish last. :)

I think this is a tough challenge for voters. I'm seeing some spectacular shots, they just don't fit the newspaper category. For good or ill, newspaper means photojournalism for many. So I'm looking for images with that kind of feel. Tough one for us all.

Just remember that this was a very strange contest to judge. There were quite a few outstanding photos with really bad headlines, and incredibly mediocre photos with amazing headlines. I considered the headline to be as important as the photo, and rated accordingly. I'm sure many others did as well.

I do find it kind of amusing (really amusing, not being facetious in the least) how many comments I've received saying that my newspaper shot needed a better angle...

I guess if it were an accident scene I could have asked the paramedics to drag the bodies a little closer to my car - it is a DPC challenge, you know!! Or if it were an arrest scene, the cops could have allowed the cuffed suspect to pose for me.

In news photography, you shoot what happens as it happens, from the best perspective you can physically or legally get, at that millisecond in time. At least I think that's how it goes. They can't recreate the accident or the bust so that the news photog can get a better angle, right?

I just wonder how many photos are suffering from that kind of voting. I'll stop ranting now, as this isn't the rant forum! ;o)

These are all my thoughts exactly. I felt in this case, the headline was part of the challenge. If a photo was quite obviously journalistic, I suggested a possible alternative headline. But if the photo was hovering on the edge and the headline wasn't clear (or an actual headline as many weren't) it was a bit harder to evaluate the photo in terms of the challenge.

My favourite headline is the one about {edit} untterly stoopid but really made me laugh.

Laurielblack,

I was one who commented on the angle in a couple of my comments. Both were events outside of the photographers control. But both were also on public streets. I think the photographers were slightly shy about moving in for a better angle. (and I don't blame them, I'm the same way) But the shots would've improved tremendously taken at a better angle. I agree about timing, perhaps they could only be where they were when they snapped the shot.

Just giving you my reasoning anyway. . .

I just wanted to say thank you for answering me with such a rhetorical reticent retort to my own plying question.

Very strange Challenge. I find myself voting high for pics with a good headline but low for good pictures that you would never see in a newspaper. It will be interesting to see who wins this one. Anything could come out on top.

im not feeling so hot about mine either. Mine was turned to a semi-grainy, black and white photo like they are in the newpapers. Mine was actually taken with the newspaper headline in mind. Some people claim they dont even get the headline? Not to toot my own horn I should be above a 3.8. This is going to be my lowest challenge score to date.

(thanks frog)

Newspapers are getting better at printing high-quality photos. Many of the front page pics are color and look pretty darn good. In addition, photojournalism isn't about great composition, exposure, etc. Look at the photojournalism shots that have won pulitzer prizes over the years... many are not technically great, but they capture a moment... an emotion. That is what I have been looking for. The capture of the moment... getting the viewer to relate to the subject and know what it may have been like to be there.

Looks like you received what you yearned for. Congrats on top 9 on the desat photo!

I saw a number of photos where the shot could have been improved with simple cropping to give the impression of a better angle. Just because the shot is taken at a second's notice doesn't mean photojournalists don't crop or edit their photos. And I was actually appalled by the lack of thought some people put into their headlines. There were only maybe 5 strong headline-photo pairs.

As far as commenting, I wish people would at least tryto be helpful in their comments. "?" is not a comment, and it doesn't have any purpose except to annoy the photographer. If you don't understand the subject, say what you don't understand, or critique the picture itself, or don't leave a comment at all. I guess it's a variation on an old adage:

"If you don't have something useful to say, don't say anything at all"

I was at a wedding recently when a guest at the reception got waaaay too drunk and waaaay too out of control -- verbally abusive, threatening, and generically spewing her stored up pain all over the place.

Long story short, she wound up getting collected by the cops. I had been shooting the wedding for my friend, so I was attached to my camera for the whole scenario. I shied away from shooting any pix of the drunk guest because I didn't want to A) remind my friend of the fiasco for all eternity, B) create a situation where someone could be humiliated (to a broader audience, at least) or C) cause my friends, who have only recently moved into this small town, to become persona non grata.... or is it gratae if it's plural.

I had thoughts about the newspaper challenge, and photojournalism in general. It must be a tough field if you're sensative to the power of an image.

Does anyone have any advice about getting over this shyness, sensativity, or otherwise having some type of hangup when shooting?

Well, one thing you can do is shoot first and ask questions later. If your friend really didn't want the shot, you could always delete it later, but you can never retake it. Also, remember the waiver form to avoid a bad situation.
