Okay Okay, so the last one just ended... But my teammates and I are already itching to do this again... I did a search, but couldn't find anything in the forums so I figured I'd just ask.

Your guess is as good as mine... I'm sure there will be a significant break, though. That's my gut feeling. I'd guess they might run it twice a year, max. I could be wrong.

The longer wait the better, I did not enjoy DPC during the DPL.

Why's that?

I hope it is in a few months in lieu of a few years . . . that was great to see all the fantastic participation and creativity.

I hope its soon. Would be nice if it was 3-4 times a year.

Bring on DPL3!!!

Well, okay maybe as summer winds down for many of us. I would really like to see it running perhaps four times a year. DPL2 was my first experience with a team photography effort and I loved it. So much so that now that it is gone I don't even feel all that compelled to enter DPC challenges, and I haven't. There is so much more incentive to enter for your team vs just yourself and it is so great to have the camaraderie of teammates!

DPL2 brought huge amounts of participation to the DPC site and I would think the powers that be would be anxious to announce the next season and breath some life back into DPC. I am sure many people being on vacation (and some weird topics lately- ahem!) has something to do with the small number of entries lately, but I think an announcement of a DPL3 would create some buzz.

Maybe not every user was happy with the way DPL2 went down, so lets announce a new season and open a dialogue on what tweaks might make the next season work better for everyone :-)

I couldn't agree more! Personally I learn a lot during the DPL and would love it to come back soon.
Gap between first two DPL seasons was 3 years if I'm correct and it would be a real pity if it was anything longer than a few months this time a round.
We had some really talented photogs that were not so active and "made a comeback" just to be part of the latest DPL. There were a ton of brilliant entries and I think it picked up the quality of DPC for a while.

[tongue in cheek] Who do we have to bribe to get it going faster and do they take rocks as payments? [tongue out of cheek]

It should run from Sept to Nov so it doesn't fall into Dec with the holidays and all. I don't want one during the summer though. Or wait until Jan. and have it there. Unfortunately the admins of this site just don't seem to care much anymore about anything on this site and when they do it seems like we're bothering them.

We need new blood in the admin department so this site can get rid of the staleness that has permeated into DPC. It seems like a ghost town sometimes. (Admin wise)

It also looks like DPC is being abandoned by its creators. Maybe selling to people who want to put time into it would be a good thing for DPC and its members/users.

Prove me wrong.

Shooooo - strong sentiments there...
I have seen similar comments in other threads so I know you ar enot the only one that thinks this way.

It is sad if it is indeed true.

I joined here earlier this year and have generally loved every minute of it - especially the DPL!
I agree Sept to Nov makes a lot of sense. Lets hope the powers that be actually read these posts and try and encourage site growth by being more active...

We have seen the posts and are discussing it. There were some concerns about the last season (not the least of which was the possible effect on overall voting) that we are looking into before the next "season."

Agreed, DPC is slowly dieing. The DPL turned into a damp squib at the end.
Langdon couldn`t even be arsed to log in and congrat the winners.

wow...what a way to turn a happy forum post into an SC bashing session.

I'm very "meh" about this... I was just barely able to summon the will to post...

DPL was ok, but not something I care deeply about one way or the other.

I`m not SC bashing, they do an excellent job. The SC just police this site, not control it`s future.

For me, it seems it would made sense that you can't vote on your own teams entries and that the opposing teams entries would be intermingled with all others (to keep anonymity); however, when you cast your vote it does not count. That way, the opposing team would not know the entries but would also know that if they scored it high or low it also wouldn't count. So you can't hurt or help the other team.

Just to be clear, I have the utmost respect for the SC and their work. NO WHERE IN MY POST did I mention the SC. My post is pointed right at the main man, Langdon, nobody else. Like mentioned, he didn't even congratulate the DPL winners. We had to complain over and over for the DPL to finally come and guess what, we;re now hearing the same BS about the last DPL. It'll take how long for this to be resolved? I'm guessing by 2012, probably later so don't hold your breath.

I'll say it again. Maybe injecting some new blood in the upper echelons of administration,Langdon, would be a positive thing for DPC because right now it looks like he's abandoned DPC and it shows.
If he would at least come in here and talk to his membership that would ease the tension. It looks like DPC is insignificant to Langdon, prove me wrong. I know he has a life but that isn't an excuse when you own a business and you have paying members. If he can't handle it, sell. I'm sure he would find buyers right here within his membership.

Was I clear enough? This has nada to do with the Site Council, they're doing the best they can with what they have.

Your idea makes a lot of sense to me Erin. If some people are suspicious that the DPL causes scores to go down, a scenario where teams are able to give high votes without concern that it will give a boost to their opposing team should alleviate that suspicion. Seems these proposed changes to the voting system would be simple to implement too?

Teams know which photos belong to their own members -- the ability to "collaborate" on entries is a key feature of the program. All other photos are de facto on other teams, so there is the possibility that people will vote just a little lower overall -- this is one of the things we need to check out. It could also be that certain teams or even certain individuals vote in a significantly different pattern during the season than their overall voting history would prdict.

I'm not saying that any of these things are actualy happening, but that they are necessary to consider before proceeding to make sure that the DPL does not significantly affect the site in a negative way.

So SC...
What is happening to the planning of the next DPL? Or do you just wish it would not happen again?

If generally lower votes were a concern - then change the voting rules so that your votes dont count towards your opponents or someother variation like that? Then there is no reason to vote lower to try and give your team a better chance of victory.
If Teams / individuals were significantly changing their voting patterns have you looked into it and done any research yet? Its been months now - how much longer do you need?
It certainly did get site participation up... something that has been sorely lacking for a while now.
Is it only going to be years between each DPL, or an annual event, or...

That sounds like a good idea to me.

I'd definitely be interested in this.

Does anyone else have any other ideas on how to make the voting more fair during the DPL? That seemed to be the biggest concern during the last DPL.
Suggestions:
1) Make all votes for opposition null and void / make the oppositions photos un-votable (like your own team mates photos)
2) ?
02/23/2011 02:10:51 PM · #24
We also need to consider exactly what effect scrubbing the votes from competition would have.

The theory so far posted has been that this will remove any incentive for voting low to hurt your opposition, which is true, unfortunately, it does, however, introduce a completely different problem, namely the ability to hurt your opposition through abnormally high voting patterns.

Effectively, you could easily manipulate that methodology by voting extremely high, as then your competition will suffer (placement/ % wise) because of the removal of the high votes, which has the exact same effect as a low vote.

In the end, I'm honestly not sure that there is a way to ensure that no-one is affected in a negative way by this (although, admittedly, people will moan less about the high voting cheating)...

That, however, would also knock you and your teammates down as well. There's no perfect answer but I do think it would help if you could not vote on either your team's or your opponent's photos. The voting trends of the last DPL were pretty scary and this time I do think it would get non-DPL participants to not participate, which of course is a bad thing.
