I think the question about whether it's the lens or the camera is valid and I'm only more than happy to help. Ship the lens to me for a month or two and I'll take some shots on my 8mp 350D. I'm willing to do this for the sake of science ;-)

:) An excellent suggestion! I'll get to packing that and I'll have it shipped out tomorrow.. Oh, I just remembered that I have a 20D laying around here somewhere... ;)

Seriously enough, if anyone wants a photo done with the 20D for comparison purposes, I would oblige if needed.

Added an image from my new 15-85..

You'll love that 15-85. I just bought a used 17-85 from Scalvert, and the focal range makes it the perfect walk around lens. I went out shooting this evening and left the camera bag in the truck, because I had a lens that covered most of the range I might want.

Great pictures, you must have a really nice camera and/or lens. ;P

I agree, it's very nice, the 28-135 was plenty long, but it wasn't sharp and it wasn't wide enough. This lens seems to solve both problems, while throwing in a rock solid IS system.

I'm happy.

They're just photoshopped lol. =P Seriously though, those are great pics. Love the contrast between the sharp subject and the gorgeous bokeh. They just need a very slight dose of noise reduction.

Even being the cheapskate that I am, I didn't even consider the 28-135. Regardless of anything else, I would miss the wide end.

It was my kit lens..

Mine was refurb, body only, so I didn't get a kit lens with it.

Yeah, one of these days I'm going to get a refurb S90 or some such for that busted G9..

Thanks for pointing out the finer bits of that process to me...

Cory, I also got the new Canon 15-85mm about two weeks ago, and I love it. The quality is amazing especially considering it's not an L series. I also picked up the Canon 70-300mm which I also love because I never had that reach before on my DSLR. The IS works great on that lens...especially if you use the 1/focal length rule of thumb on the shutter speed give or take a little. Not a great L series monster like you bought, but I would say it's Canon's best non-L series telephoto lens they make even compared to the 70-300mm DO lens because I really don't like the bokeh quality on that lens. Congrats on your new toys!

Congrats on yours as well!

The 70-300 was an option I considered, but in the end, I wanted an 800mm, so I just went as close as I could afford :) (and no a 2x tele isn't an option.. I pixel peep like crazy! here's a 1-1 of Durango Colorado from 13.5 miles away :) )

I've looked at the 75-300 previously, wow, what a pile of crap - There's a world of difference between those two lenses..

So, have you tried a panning shot with your IS yet? Man it works well! Here's a quick snap I got, only time for one click so the auto pan IS is a godsend for shots like this...

I've looked at the 75-300 previously, wow, what a pile of crap - There's a world of difference between those two lenses..

Yeah, the 75-300mm is crap, and I never would get that one. I the 70-300 is at least 2.5 to 3 times more expensive, but you actually get a lens that is worth mounting on the front of your camera body. LOL.

I haven't tried the panning IS on the telephoto yet, but it's on my to do list. LOL. Definitely one of the big selling points of the 70-300mm....the improved IS, and I really like the two mode IS switch to put it into pan mode.

Nice shots, and I like the pan one.

Ah, ok...I wasn't sure which lens you were talking about, but thought it was the 70-300mm even though you didn't go with that. I've read a lot of reviews praising it on that lens so that added to my confusion.

Haven't tested it on the 15-85mm yet either. I like panning shots, but to be honest I get so involved in shooting landscapes etc. that I don't often think about having fun with pans. I did a few recently, but they were with my kits lens which is now retired. :)

I do love the fact that the IS senses when it's on a tripod and shuts itself off as well. Saves me from having to remember that extra step..especially when shooting multiple exposures for HDR. Canon did a fantastic job designing this lens. I paid $720 for mine, but I do feel it was worth the money. As Steve (Yo Spiff) mentioned earlier it makes a great walk around with enough on the wide end and a medium focal length on the long side. Like he said....it's a lens that you can take out and leave most of your kit behind when you don't want to be carrying everything including the kitchen sink. LOL.

I agree. The sharpness on the wide end is especially important to me. I agree...the colors and contrast are excellent from this lens. Maria, how do you like the wide end of the 15-85mm compared to your 10-22mm lens. That's one of my next planned purchases on my way to getting the 7D body that I've wanted so bad since it was announced let alone released...LOL.

If you have the 15-85 you may find that it is wide enough for you to get the job done most of the time.
