So, today that beautiful big brown truck arrived with my pretty white lens (and some EF-S thing too.. ;) ..)..

I was worried about many, many things with the 100-400L IS lens, but -- get this- I've just spent an hour shooting with it and I love it!

I don't know if I just got a good copy, or if I'm just not picky enough yet, but this thing looks great all the way to 400mm, sharp and clean ..

The IS is completely insufficient, but it does help, and I've been shooting it hand-held, so I'm sure a tripod would be a major change in that dynamic..

As for weight? BAH! Who would complain about this thing? It's a bit heavy, but not nearly as bad as I was expecting, given all the whining.. I think the weight even helps a bit with holding it steady..

I can't wait to get some real pictures in with this lens..

So, in the mean time, I just wanted to share SOMETHING.. Here's a couple of pictures, all snapshots down at the local pond.. Nothing fantastic, but the results seem sharp and clean.

I haven't used the EF-S 15-85 much yet, but the IS does seem ROCK solid, and the lens feels great and seems to really deliver in the IQ department too..

Oh, and if anyone cares to identify any of those, that would be super cool... I'm not great beyond general species identification..

I've been thinking about spending the money on some good L glass and couldn't decide on the 70-200 range or the 100-400.
Your "Nothing fantastic" shots have just convinced me to save the extra cash and go for the latter.

Thanks for posting and, if they are all hand held shots, that makes me want that lens even more!

All certified hand held.. (I do have a very steady technique :), but the lens is good, very good.)..

Glad my showboating has helped you in your decision :) I think you'll be happy...

You have received a good copy. It looks as sharp as mine. This lens is the one that is most often found on any camera that I chose to shoot with. I like your processing very much.

Excellent, excellent, and thanks! :)

Why'd you have to go an tell people about this? I mean, seriously! Now they know it's the equipment, not the photographer. Where's the mystery?

Actually, it looks a lot sharper than mine... But I wondering it that has anything to do with the megapixel difference between the cameras, somehow...

Might be the camera or the processing.

I totally processed all of these.. Suppose I should have mentioned they have been processed..

Of course, I shoot in RAW, so everything is processed to one degree or another..

Dunno, I could reshoot on the 20D or send you a RAW file to look at if you wanted.. PM me if you'd like that.

Very cool.. Love those dragonflies.

When you finally admit to your problem, there is a 12 step program for gear junkies available.

I'd be curious to see what a couple looked like at actual pixels -- but I don't really need to see the whole thing. If you're willing, if you could blow up two of your shots (that were taken at 400mm) to actual pixels, and just crop it down to the birds face or the dragonfly (or both). I'd love to see it. Mine looks nice until I blow it up to 1:1, then it's pretty soft, even on a tripod.

Can it possibly involve buying more gear? Cause that's what I feel like I REALLY need to do.. :)

1 : 1 crops, converted from RAW, no sharpening or clarity or any such thing, no CA correction.. Just converted (exposure corrections are used.)

ETA: All of the above were shot at 400mm.. Hand held.

Hopefully it's just my excellent editing, and everyone's is this sharp.. I'd feel a bit guilty otherwise.

Also, keep in mind this is one of the best out of 30 or so dragon fly shots.
