However, the "Gotta enter every challenge even if my picture is poop" mentality still thrives here - especially after reading replies from people that seem to feel the #of Challenges = How good you are. Hint: When you surf my full name on the internet - you find my photos! Hmmm..... what do I find when I surf your name?

To appease the nah sayers - I will load a few other pictures of mine to this web site........ check out my various portfolios in a few days.

For those of you who want to know how good my picture in this challenge is - and it's doing quite nice, thank-you...... Why does it's place or number matter? That I learned a new technique, posted a how to do it, and spent three days giving it my best shot is enough. Where was your effort?

In the future - if you want to avoid sarcastic comments from me - don't waste my time voting on your poorly composed material. And considering some of the poor excuses for a submission I've been forced to view the past two days - I have been *very* tactful - you have no idea what I really wanted to write. Seems very lucky for many of you I don't enter every challenge, and, I only vote or comment on challenges I have personally accomplished...... I'm in the same boat as you. I just know how to sail better.

you are full of crap and big headed....lack of O2 up there!!!!!

I would think that in 36+ years of photography you would learn to take some great pictures... What are you thinking??!!?

I think that should be the bottom line.

This appears to be a frequently voiced but rarely questioned statement.

I wonder how advantageous it is to so easily dismiss any possibility of art having any universal properties, any communicable reality, not to mention tangible and measurable elements.

Is anything "Art" if there is no eye to see it or brain to interpret it? If not, then art is, by definition, "subjective."

I think if you you don't understand what people are thinking after 230 some shots -- maybe you DONT KNOW WHAT PEOPLE ARE THINKING, and you should re-evaluate YOUR thought process.

FIGURE IT OUT!

BTW _ how is your submission doing?

I just can't stop laughing when I read a comment on one of his masterpeices saying the same phrase "What were you thinking???" lol

This thread is so bizarre to me. Very definitely a subjective viewpoint because my mind is working in strange ways due to sleep deprivation. But I actually found myself thinking,"DPC should make buttons or t-shirts emblazoned with 'What was I thinking???!!!' They should be created using selective desaturation."

I don't really think this--I'm generally way more cynical than that. I've just read those words so many times today they have taken on the flavor of a catch phrase.

Just to give you an idea of how my mind is working today, this morning, shortly after taking a dose of Adderall in an attempt to quiet my overactive brain, I developed a sudden obssession with the notion of pet rats and spent about an hour on line researching the topic. Then, I went to the Sal and bought $72 worth of records in hopes of selling them on eBay. What was I thinking????!!!!!

What a site (or sight) that would be!!!! ;o)

Well...um...I really don't want to "banter" back and forth with GW...I think it would be a waste of energy and resources.

[puts on glasses, engages Freudian accent as she is stepping up on soap box] There are some people in this world who are natural bullies - ones who find it amusing to belittle others to build themselves up. Most were neglected, abused, or picked on as children, and find it the only way to cover their own low self-esteem. I could go even deeper...some weren't breast-fed long enough or were potty-trained too quickly...but I won't go there. After all, we're here for photography and to improve. The actions of one bad apple shouldn't spoil the whole bunch, so to speak. I choose to be happy regardless of the negativity of certain members. [stepping off of soap box]

Whew...Let's all hug and sing Kumbaya now, OK? ;o)

I wouldn't be surprised to see that phrase in a TV ad, lol

It just cracks me up whenever I read it now...

Art is said to have religious origins. I believe it relates a need. Whatever art is, I cannot say, but I have a good sense that you and I know what it is as much as we know, say, a chair.

If I have no eye to see, I will or will not take your word for it that it is one. If I'm vacuous, your word will have no meaning.

It was really more of a tongue-in-cheek remark (as noted by the Freudian accent I don't possess)...didn't mean to become "no better than him." ;o)

I've been reading GW's comments from previous challenges and I don't see anything wrong with what he writes. He may be a bit too direct and callous with some of his comments, but that's his style. Ok, so you don't want him as a friend, but he is writing his uncensored thoughts and this can be very valuable to one who wants to learn photography, whether or not you agree with him or not.

As for previous comments about him suffering from low self esteem and not being breast fed, well, that also shows an extreme reaction in a person and could be interpreted as a statement to the effect of how defensive and guarded one has to be when confronted with criticism.

Get over it!

I didn't say he was suffering from low self esteem or wasn't breast fed...I made a general comment about some people who bully. He wasn't mentioned by name in that comment. Thank you.

somebody missing something here?

I am sorry you feel that way. I haven't received a comment from this person anyway...so I have nothing to be defensive about.

What he wrote to me started with "What were you thinking?" and ended with "Duh!"

His style? Am i supposed to like it?

Sorry, but you must have a very big chip on your shoulder. Nobody forces you to view anything, nor does the world revolve around you, i.e. the purpose of our participation here is not to infringe on your precious time, but to learn...do not do us any favors if you feel we are twisting your arm to view our pictures...
I happen to be an ex-math teacher and I do know what it takes to teach (and learn) a hard subject, to keep the students motivated...I pride myself on having a few PhD's among my ex-students that are my friends today and I know that some of them at one time or another had to struggle hard with the subject, they made a lot of mistakes and hit a lot of roadblocks on the way. Thankfully they did not have a boor "teaching" them.

Well, first of all, I didn't even single you out in my the comment you responded to, but you chose to respond, so I have to ask, was that from guilt?

Secondly, if that wasn't meant for GW, then who was it meant for?

Well I am not picking on you, I just dont understand the outrage here. I really dont. The guy speaks his mind, is a bit cocky, but so what?...the main part of the the outrage was...."What were you thinking?" What is so mean about that?

I got one of those comments ...and you know what, he was right. His comments were dead on.

I just dont know where all this hostility comes from.....it really suprises me.

At any rate...I will go watch me score dive....... :)

No, you don't have to like it, but see if you can learn something from it, and if you can not, then just move on and be done with it. There are many comments from different people on this site that don't always connect with what we are trying to say in our photographs and may make comments that you don't agree with...same here...absorb what you need to, discard the rest and learn from it. Be resilient and let the negative bounce off of you.

To answer the two questions from Olyuzi...

1. You did by referring to a comment made by me and only me, so that's singling me out.

2. It was meant in this instance for all commenters who make rude or hateful remarks that don't have to be rude or hateful at all. Those who comment without common human decency. Those who find it difficult to be tactful in the dispensing of constructive criticism. Those who tend to make their "attacks" to the photographer and not the photograph. That's who I was making that comment about.

Jeez...this is really ridiculous. I was not hostile, nor was I singling one person out. My comment was broad-based. But let's face it...the guy COULD be a little nicer, as could most of us from time to time. That's all this thread boils down to. Why is that such a huge request?
