Roller coaster is right. I think my image seriously polarized the voters. I'm getting some really high scores (including my one comment) and some really low ones. Either way, it's the first time I've been asked to verify. Check off another line on my "no longer a n00b list."

Don't do it for the score pals. Do it for you ! This site only helps you to increase your creativity and your technique. Of course, score gives you a little challenge but that's not all.

100 vote check in (got here much faster than my other recent entries).
Much improved from my first post and probably higher than it should be so I expect it to drop soon.

Stats: You have rated 66 of 66 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 6.4242.

As you can see I feel most entries are very good though I feel a couple may struggle against being DQ'd. It didn't affect my vote for them. Good luck everyone

From admin:-
You may not use ANY editing tool to move, remove or duplicate any element of your photograph that would change a typical viewer's description of the photograph (aside from color), even if the tool is otherwise legal, and regardless of whether you intended the change when the photograph was taken.

Well I think, I dint use tool to move, remove or duplicate any component of image but judges thought it otherwise .sob sob

Hi experts,

Need help from you all to let me know where did I go wrong….

My image has been disqualified. I do respect admin’s decision on this but just want to know exactly what went wrong in my editing which resulted in the disqualification of the entry.

the reasoning provided was
You may not use ANY editing tool to move, remove or duplicate any element of your photograph that would change a typical viewer's description of the photograph (aside from color), even if the tool is otherwise legal, and regardless of whether you intended the change when the photograph was taken.
Your entry has been reviewed by the Site Council and/or Administrators, who have confirmed that your submission must be disqualified.

Since I did not move, remove or duplicate any element of my photograph and used features of Photoshop which were allowed in advanced editing so I fail to understand the reason or may be I am missing something …I requested admin to point out the steps on my processing which is not allowed in advanced editing but have not heard from them so far (I know they might be very busy …so no complains)
I will greatly appreciate if you can let me know which step(s) is/are not allowed in advanced editing challenge, as you all are expert in this field
I started with this image

Step 1:
Filter -> Stylize -> Find Edges

Step 2 : Applied Gradient (spectrum) with blend mode as color. The result is shown below

Step 3: Inverted color (Image -> Adjustment->Invert) Result is shown below

Step 4: Adjusted curve to get the final image

I checked the Rules and it mentions that You may ….
· apply filters, effects, dodge & burn, and other tools to all or part of your entry, but NO new shapes or features may be created in the process.
· saturate, desaturate or change the colors of your entry or any existing object within it.

Kindly let me know what am I missing so that I can correct myself and will not repeat the same mistake again.
Thanks

Kunal--my guess is that a majority of the Site Council felt that you had used Photoshop to remove an element of your photograph--in this case, the background.

I would agree that it is probably the removal of the bushes in the background.

But if the background wasn't selected, per se, to be removed and it was all done through a filter in PS, was this really "removing" the background?

Well, since the background isn't really there any more, it does seem to be removed...

ETA: It strikes me as a very clever edit that accomplishes its result in an unusual way, which unfortunately has run afoul of the catch-all part of the rule against removing/adding major features. That's not to say that it should have been obvious before the fact that these edits would result in a DQ. There really, really ought to be a corpus of individual photos/decisions/Q&As on the rules so that these kind of innocent mistakes aren't so easy to fall into.

I do not know on what premises this was DQ'd, but I hope SC had requested the steps for editing that the author used to reach to the final image, and at least 'tried' to reproduce the final image as explained below by Kunal.

For some reason I feel the SCs are illogically strict at times, no offense to any one person.

OhmyGOODNESS! I just voted on every image in this challenge, and I was amazed! By far the most impressive collection of photos in a challenge in a very long time! I don't think I've given out that many 10's in 3 or 4 challenges combined. Someone needs to get the marketing director for Absolut to tune in to these photos. We'd have some people making some $$$$$ here! I'm surprised to see some of these low scores because I can not believe we aren't going to see some very high 7's and/or 8's when it is all said and done. Congratulations guys!

07/03/2010 01:51:15 AM · #48
:( I'm sorry for the DQ! I feel pretty sure as well that it was the total change of the look of your background with your stylizing step. You aren't allowed to remove or completely change the background, and I think that's what they mean by "even if the steps would otherwise be legal". Even tho filters are legal, if you completely change the background, its illegal. Sigh. That's tough because it is a nice photo.

Thanks for all your comments it helps me a lot.

I wish I had this image instead

you also state that you applied a gradient/spectrum in step 2... i guess you therefore "added" a rainbow coloration that was not there in the original, so that might have gotten you DQed, too.

but it was an amazingly nice photo!
