I am looking at setting up a site to sell prints from shoots (eg weddings) and digital downloads and I am looking at zenfolio as they actually link back to a uk lab ... are there any other options people use? I set up a photobox pro account but their site is pretty limited and lacks a lot of functionality.

cheers

Hi Robert,
unfortunately I do not know myself...however I'd like to know more about it, too...so let's hope someone is going to respond with some helpful info :D

you might consider looking at Exposure Manager. I use them because they not only have low fees and commissions (about $100/yr for unlimited galleries and images, and only 10% commissions to cover shopping cart & credit card), but they also allow self-fulfillment. I upload batch-processed web-ready images and only edit for print when I get an email notice of an order. I use a local lab and handle and ship the prints myself. If you have any questions, pm me.

Doesn't that mean that the picture the buyer looks at on the web and inspires the order is going to look at least a little different than the print they receive?

more than likely. they are informed that the online version does not reflect the quality of the printed image. i also use a questionnaire with all purchases to find out what they intend to do with the print (frame it, frame it with a matte, mount it, scrap book it, etc), whether they prefer horizontal or vertical or leave it to me. i also have a no-questions-asked return policy, just in case (and that's only been used once in 6 years). as to editing, the delivered print is fairly close to the online, except for custom-cropping, spot-editing, and typically area-specific shadow/highlight adjustments.

Hey Bob - I spent some time looking at this and ended up with Zenfolio as they do a pretty comprehensive package and are the only one I could find in the UK that allows you to host / sell / set your own pricing structure / your own branding / your own discounts etc etc.

In fact if you do go ahead and use them you can even use my referral code VRJ-786-PDG

:- )

I am still developing my site at the moment but by all means ahve a look and if you have any questions drop me a line.

link

eta - they also print in the UK (via photobox) which is a deal breaker over trying to get pictures shipped in.

I'll try to revive this thread, as I'm in the same boat.

I'm back and forth between the states and Europe, and I need a site that will accept multiple currencies and be able to provide processing and fulfillment in the areas I'm not, which changes. I really like Exposure Manager, as highlighted by Skip, but they only transact in USD and process in Texas.

Seems like Zenfolio works with multiple currencies and can process in multiple places as well. Anyone know of any other web shops that would compete?

Also, I read in another thread about creating a web site and then selling through Zenfolio. What would be the benefit of that when you can do it all through Zenfolio?

Thanks for any advice.

I think this site is just US$ but they do ship anywhere in the world.

Thanks for that. Interesting site. I may get into that as well, but for now I'm looking more for something where I'll be on my own and not thrown in with better other photographers.

Scott - as I said peviously like the rest of you I did quite a bit of looking before joining Zen.

It really does seem to own the European niche - and do the rest of the world as well. The others do the 'rest of the world' and post to Europe, but you really can't expect any prospective purchasers in Germany or the UK to want to order from your site in a different currency then get it shipped across the Atlantic to them - and that's before you have any issues with the order !

Zen's pretty good - you can have a trial account for a month FoC, and if you like it I can even give you a referral voucher :- )
