Hmmmm....everybody has their own thoughts about this...but...Julie Gillard is officially our first female Prime Minister as of a few minutes ago!

Only time will tell...although I have my doubts! I think Australia is in for a rough ride!

Same party, different leader.
She definitely has her work cut out for her rectifying the work of her predecessor.

Pity help Australia. Kevin Rudd may have been less than perfect as a pm, but I'll bet he's nothing compared to Julia Gillard.

Looks like they are trying the same old trick as QLD elections a few years back...Kick out the hated male leader (or get him to step down) just before elections..put in a female leader...oh hey we've made history now, can't kick her out straight away, gotta give her a fair go.

Now Julia Gllard will most likely come in as a hero and repair all the damage caused by big bad K. Rudd. But wait until after elections if she wins, the real plans will come forward then.

but anyway that's my two bobs worth.

We might have the first Female Pm but not by Australia's choice. My guess is that the next election she will be shown the door.

I dearly hope so. It seems like a rather desperate act on behalf of the Labor Party.

A lot like Canada's first female PM, Kim Campbell. Grr..that one still bugs me.

Does this mean she now has to trip around the globe meeting important people?

The problem being she wasn't Australia's first "elected" female PM. I haven't spoken to anyone (from either side of the political fence) who is happy about the way the change came about. Although we vote for parties and not individuals - the reality is - people vote for individuals who they think have honesty, integrity etc. Nobody voted her in. When you look at the polls objectively - the general population were still happy with Rudd (although down on previous polls) - it was the Labor cacus who were not happy. My main worry is that the media "love" her - it's almost like the voters have no say - its up to big business and the media to decide who we will have as leaders.

She's also an atheist. Not newsworthy to many Europeans, but still a pretty rare thing in the anglo English speaking west.

It doesn't actually say she is an "atheist" but I do like this quote:

"Julia Gillard’s stance on religion is unknown, and this is exactly how it should be," says Nicholls. "As a rational and highly intelligent person I would hope she is an atheist, but at the very least, I hope that with her appointment, there is an opportunity to take 'God' out of the Australian Parliament."

She is also living in a de-facto relationship which is a first for an Australian leader. It almost feels like we are becoming a modern society at last.

I must have missed it...just exactly where does it state she is an atheist? Never mind...this has been addressed already.

Is Nicholls referring to himself or Gillard? ;-Þ

Hey your following us here in Canada, we too had a female Prime Minister (for about 5 seconds, OK 4 months and 10 days) if I remember right she was sworn in on June 25th 1993 and was sent packing on November 4 1993. She was the 19th PM of Canada and never given her time to shine. Let's hope your PM is given a better chance.

All the best to you and yours.

MAX!

ETA: I guess I should tell you who she was, Kim Campbell. My bad.
