No that you are doing this, but so what.

I hate when people penalize because someone else had the same idea. It's not like photographers get together and conspire to do the same shot. It just happens. Go with the quality of the photo (and as always relevance to the theme).

In my view, the quality of the photo is affected by the level of originality. In copying a famous photo, there's obviously a reduced degree of originality or creativity involved, but it's still possible to execute with a new twist or to have chosen a photo to duplicate that is outside of the main herd.

Halfway through voting, I am dead sick of Afghan Girl reproductions, and that is affecting my scoring.

Each of those photos was 100% original upon submission. And they really still are. People are penalizing as if they copied each other or came from the same class.

OTOH: You could say since all the photos are copies of "famous" photos, then NONE of them are original and all should be penalized equally.

Really...

Unless we are to score entirely on technical merit, then there is a subjective aspect to voting that ultimately boils down to how much we like the photo. Art is about what appeals to us, what provokes our imagination, what makes us want to keep looking.

And after 10 Afghan Girls and another 10 or so to go, they don't appeal to me, they deaden my imagination, and I want to go do something else instead of continuing to vote.

I understand what you're saying, but with so many different challenges, you're going to hit quite a number of them that bore you. I got incredibly sick of peanuts, but I didn't think that the photos deserved a low score because I was sick of them. I just had to take breaks so that I didn't start giving everything a low score, simply because I had no interest in peanuts. Each photo should be judged on its own merits and deserves its own score. Not a lower score simply because there's so many of them.

Basically, I have heard many times in this thread, that people aren't liking that there's that many. And the scores are certainly reflecting that. That sounds like if there were only 3 of them, they would score higher. Doesn't seem quite right to me.

I got tagged once for not being original when out of 200-300 entries ONE other person had the same general idea. Small minded is small minded.

P.S. I am not even in this challenge... just hate to bad voting patterns. If a person cannot be objective, then they should skip that image -- NOT penalize the image because of their own personal flaw.

As a preliminary matter, I reserve the right to penalize or reward images because of my own personal flaws, in whole or in part.

Art does not exist in a vacuum. Each photograph does not exist in isolation. Any time I look at a picture, I'm bringing to the table my own experience, perspective, biases, preferences, and idiosyncrasies. Part of that is whether I've been oversaturated with the subject matter already.

That being said, if there were 50 Afghan Girls in the challenge and they were all stunningly executed, I'd score them all highly. But when a lot of them don't strike me as particularly well done, I get even more tired of them and am less inclined to score indulgently.

Besides, are you really asking me to score photography--art--objectively? If so, I submit that you ask the impossible.

I am just amazed at the number of people who watch sesame street in here.

"The Transylvanian Count von Count is just mad about counting everything that crosses his path. Whether it’s black cats, cobwebs, bats, or belfries, or Afghan girls, if he sees it, he’ll count it. The stylish fellow with the impressive incisors is possibly a distant relative of Count Dracula, but he’s much more interested in counting people.

I think our version is much more interested in biting than counting :)

Whew, I'm glad I chose an "original" subject that only has a 1/2 dozen or so variants in this challenge!

A smiley = penalty? Since when? Who's to say I don't have an AG myself?;)

Just saying that assumptions can be deceiving:)

Know what this tells me??? That good art is not always popular.

Or is it so that the more popular it is (AGs), means it appealed to more people, means it was indeed good art? And how can you dare not like what the masses liked, ahead of Adams and kins?;$;);)

happy votes mates! Me still gasping for air!

"You have rated 93 of 93 images (100%) in this challenge."

I gave 3 10s, 2 9s, 11 8s, 19 7's.

Some of you should now feel happy about your scores:-)
