Alright gang,

Will there be more pictures depicting FEAR or more pictures depicting SCARY in this challenge?

I hope there's lots of both :) same difference to me :)

I kind of agree. There isn't a lot of difference between the two - especially since the topic was left open to our interpretation. Scary things are just the embodiment of someone's fear.

Yeh, is there a difference? I think the last time I was scared I was afraid, too. :? )

I think you should also consider that some picutres, while may not be scary themselves may represent something that you or others might be afraid of.

I definitely try to keep that in mind... I also try to remember that the photo needs to stand on its own without the help of the title. This being the case, I need to be able to determine the fear factor of the photo without the title, right? I guess I could be lenient on that issue but then would the site rules be useless?

I don't see any reference to the title of a shot in the site rules. Near as I can tell the site rules allow you to take the title into consideration if you like, or to completely ignore the title if you like. Am I missing something?

This is part of a recuring argument on the forum that the images be artictic as well a convey a message (challenge subject). Some say that if the design and message are clear enough a title is not nessessary. Others say that a good title can add demmention to even an excellent photo. Some use the negative argument that since some bad photo's use the title as a crutch no one should use titles. I say it's the judges job to identify when the title works or not and take the appropreate response. aelith

Ok back on topic.

What the question is: What is the difference between

I am scared. and This is scary.

But last weeks discussion seemed to indicate both were acceptable. I hope so. Mine is in the second group. aelith

I didn't realize they were the same. I would have scored the ones showing fear better than the ones that are scary if I hadn't read this thread. To me, there is a difference. One makes me feel fear, the other shows me fear.

I think we all have too much time on our hands.

Does it matter of the photo induces fear - is scary? Or displays fear?

fear [feer ] noun (plural fears)

1. feeling of anxiety: an unpleasant feeling of apprehension or distress caused by the presence or anticipation of danger showed no signs of fear

2. frightening thought: an idea, thought, or other entity that causes feelings of fear

I think both apply.
